Hope.
âHi, Hope.â
âHeidi?â Her anxious voice pushes the last bits of sleepiness from my system, and I bolt upright.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âHoney, there was an accidentââ
âWho? Is Marcel okayââ
âHeâs in the hospital.â Sheâs sobbing so much I canât make out her words.
âHope?â
âMariella didnâtâ¦itâs bad, Heidi. He woke up a little while ago and asked for you.â
âHope, what happened?â
âHe was on his bike.â
Please tell me Murphyâs okay. âWas he alone?â
âNo. Mariella was with him.â
âIs she okay?â
âNo, Heidi. Sheâs not.â
âOh my God,â I whisper. âMarcel?â
âTheyâre administering steroids now and then theyâre sending him for a CT.â
Spinal injury. âWhat about an MRI?â
âI donât know,â she answers through sniffles. âHe may have to go in for surgery.â
âGive me a couple hours. Iâll see if Axel can get off the ship. Iâll call you when I have my flight information, okay?â
âIâll see you soon.â
Sick, I race into the bathroom and wretch until tears stream down my cheeks. Mariella. My brother. What if heâs paralyzed? Oh my God, what ifâ
Freak-outs and what-ifs will have to wait until Iâm on the ten-hour flight home. I pull myself off the floor and dial Axelâs cell phone. Heâs not supposed to have it on him when heâs on shift, so Iâm not surprised he doesnât answer.
It takes me a few minutes to find the number for the ship phone. Even then, I canât reach him.
âIâll give him the message, miss, and have him call you back.â
âPlease, itâs a family emergency.â
Iâm a wreck waiting for him to call me back. I want to book my flight, but Iâm not sure how long it will take Axel to come home. Maybe I should book mine and Alexaâs first?
Finally, he calls me back.
âHeidi? Whatâs wrong? Is Alexa okay?â
âYes, sheâs fine. My brother was in an accident. Itâs bad.â
âOh, shit. Iâm so sorry, baby. Was he by himself?â
I choke on a sob and have to repeat myself a couple times before I force the words out. âNo. Mariella. Mariella was with him.â
âShe okay?â
âI donât think so. Hope wasnât very clear. Iâll find out more when I get there.â
âYouâre going home?â
âYes! I have to.â How is it even a question?
âWhy? Heâs got his club. Heâs got plenty of women willing to take care of him. He doesnât need you.â
âAre you serious right now? Do you actually hear the words coming out of your mouth?â I practically scream into the phone. âHeâs my brother. Heâs in critical condition. If something happens and I donât get to see himââ The thought of it makes me choke on a sob.
âCalm down. Wait until I get back and Iâll go with you. I donât want you and the baby traveling alone.â
Why not? Weâre alone all the time anyway. âCan you come home now?â I ask, trying to compose myself.
âNo. Iâll be home at the end of the week.â
Fuck. That. âAxel, I canât wait. I wonât. When youâre done with your shift, fly down and meet us.â
His groan travels through loud and clear. âWe donât have the money for all these flights back and forth to New York, Heidi.â
No, we donât. âI have money from my brother. Iâll use that for our tickets and Iâll move some into our joint account so you can buy your ticket.â
Axel doesnât respond. The silence goes on for so long, Iâm afraid he hung up on me.
âYeah, okay,â he finally answers.
I make the travel arrangements and actually manage to find a flight out tonight. My next call is to Hope, who promises to pick me up at the airport.
âHow is he?â
âNo change.â
âIs he breathing on his own?â
âYes.â
âOkay. Thatâs good.â My mindâs spinning with the possibilities. My limited medical knowledge isnât helping. Not surprising since Iâm flying through the apartment packing random things. I canât think straight.
âIâll text you when I get to the airport.â
âOkay, I canât wait to see the three of you.â
âUh, itâs just me, Hope. Axel canât get away for another week.â
She falters. âOh, sure. Will you be all right traveling alone with the baby?â
âIâll have to be.â Itâs pretty much me and Alexa on our own. Even when Axelâs home, he doesnât seem to know what to do with her. I donât say any of that to Hope.
Next, I stop at Pennyâs. Sheâs more than happy to give us a ride to the airport and sends me off with a big hug.
Iâm a wreck the whole flight, praying I get there in time.
âMurphy? Whereâs Hope?â
First his eyes widen, then his forehead wrinkles as he takes me in. I didnât exactly dress up for the ten-hour flight, so Iâm sure I look like hell. Great.
Alexa thankfully slept for most of the flight, but sheâs been cranky since she woke up. She lets loose with a howl as soon as I stop the stroller.
Murphy immediately picks her up, rocking and talking to her. âOh, shit. Sheâs gotten so big, Heidi.â
Heâs so sweet with her, so excited to see her, that I feel awful. My daughter should be growing up around family, not up in Alaska where we have no ties to anyone.
After a few minutes, she seems to remember him and pulls on his beard. âGood grip, kid.â He laughs and makes a silly face, which encourages her to smack him a few times.
âHowâs Marcel?â I ask.
His eyes meet mine, but theyâre unreadable. âStable. Iâll tell you more on the way. Itâs hard to explain.â
I donât know what to make of that. But heâs stable, so Iâm able to relax a notch.
âCome here, kid,â he says, giving me a brief, one-armed hug. âHow are you?â
âAnxious.â
âLetâs go.â Murphy holds my baby with one arm and pushes the stroller ahead with the other, all while talking all sorts of baby nonsense to her. I enjoy having my arms free for the first time in what feels like forever.
At the luggage carousel, we stop and Murphy tucks Alexa back into the stroller.
Thereâs no luggage yet and Iâm not sure what to say to him.
Murphyâs fingers skim over the ends of my hair. âYour hairâs gotten so long.â
I shrug, a little self-conscious about how sloppy I probably look. âI havenât had time to get it cut or anything.â No time. No money. No will. No one cares about their appearance in Alaska. Hell, itâs dark most of the time.
âItâs nice,â he says before looking away.
I donât have to point my bag out to him. He spots the hulking red suitcase and effortlessly snags it off the carousel.
âI can push her,â I offer, reaching for the stroller.
âOkay. Give me this, though,â he says, slipping my carry-on, bursting with baby gear, off my shoulder.
Iâm too tired to argue, so Alexa and I follow him out to his truck.
âSo, why are you here instead of Hope?â Heidi asks when weâre settled in the truck.
âShe had to go down to the hospital.â
Heidiâs terrified face almost makes me feel bad for lying to her. âIs Marcel okay?â
âYeah. Heâll be happy to see you two. Every time heâs woken up, heâs asked about you.â
The truth is, when Hope let it slip she was picking Heidi and Alexa up at the airport, I begged her to let me do it instead.
Beg is probably exaggerating. Hope didnât need a whole lot of convincing.
I didnât ask why Axel let her and the baby fly alone. Honestly, Iâm not all that s
urprised.
No, I wonât be an asshole and do something inappropriate. I get that sheâs married now, even if I think her husband is a piece of shit for letting her travel by herself at a time like this. But after what happened, after my best friend almost died, after Mariella did die, I need to see Heidi. I need to be near her for a few fucking seconds. Reassure myself sheâs okay.
Even though there were times in our lives where I tried to keep some distance between us, these last three months, having her so far away, have hurt in ways I never imagined.
âSo, heâs awake?â
âIn and out.â
âWhatâs going on? Hope said they were giving him steroids?â
âI donât understand all the medical jargon, but heâs lost feeling from his lower back down. Thereâs fluid or something?â
âSpinal shock?â
âI think so. They gave him steroids for the first twenty-four hours.â
âJesus, that can have some nasty side-effects.â
âI know. They explained.â
âWhat happened?â
I grip the steering wheel so hard, Iâm afraid Iâll snap it off. âHe took Mariella out. He asked me to go with them. I should have gone.â
Her hand settles on my leg, trying to reassure me. âItâs not your fault.â Somehow her words only make me feel worse.
I choose my words carefully. âIt looks like someone might have run him off the road.â
âDo you know who?â
âNo.â My jaw tightens from the lie. Marcel was adamant that it was Killa, the enforcer for the Vipers MC, a rival club we have a long and bloody history with. But thatâs club business I canât share with Heidi. Nor should I.
âDonât lie to me, Murphy. Is it another MC? Did something happen?â
Of course, Heidiâs not stupid. âHeidiââ
âDonât give me club business bullshit today, Murphy! Did someone try to kill my brother?â
âMaybe.â
âMariella?â
Christ. Poor Mariella. That sweet girl lived through fucking hell only to be rescued by us and then killed a few months later anyway. âShe didnât make it. We havenât told him yet.â
A frightened silence fills the inside of the truck. âJesus Christ, Murphy. Iâm fucking scared to be here now.â
I slow down and catch the next red light, so I can face Heidi. âLook at me. Youâre safe. I wonât let anyone hurt you or Alexa. I promise.â
âYeah, Iâm sure my brother told Mariella the same thing.â
I flinch at her words, because theyâre true.
âHeâs not in trouble, is he?â
âNo. From what I understand it was pretty clear he was run off the road.â
âDid they catch the person?â
âNot yet.â Wrath and Z are hunting down Killa and Ransom, the Vipersâ president, so they wonât be on the loose for long. But again, not something I can share with Heidi.
âMariella doesnât have any family,â Heidi says.
âI know. Weâre taking care of everything.â
âIs everyone else okay?â
âYeah. Theyâre all taking turns at the hospital. Hopeâs been there since we first found out. I actually need her to go home, so if you can help me with that later, Iâd appreciate it.â
She huffs out a laugh. âSure. No oneâs probably told her it was club-related either, I bet.â
âI donât know what Rock shares with her. Not my business. Right now, sheâs just worried about your brother.â
âThe lightâs green,â she says softly.
The hospital waiting room is full of Lost Kings who are here both for support for their injured brother and for protection. Hope and Trinity are both here, and thereâs no way theyâre going anywhere without escorts.
Hope rushes over when she sees us. She grabs Heidi, pulling her into a hug. âHeâs okay. The doctorâs reviewing his CT now.â
âCan we see him?â
âIâll ask.â
No road can take us back to the way we were.
Donât cry. Donât cry.
Oh, but itâs a struggle to see my big brother soâ¦banged up and not burst into tears.
Murphyâs standing behind me quietly, offering support by holding Alexa for me while I speak to my brother.
âMarcel?â
They have him immobilized in a rigid brace, but the fact that heâs breathing on his own gives me a small sliver of relief.
âHey,â he says, his voice a shadow of what Iâm used to. He lifts his hand to motion me closer.
âDonât move,â I warn him and he huffs out a brief laugh.
âWhenâd you get here?â
âJust now.â
His eyes close and he seems to slip back into sleep. Murphyâs hand rests on my shoulder. âHeâs been in and out.â
âIs there a doctor around?â
Murphy takes me into the hallway where one of the doctors treating my brother stops to talk to me.
âWe wonât know the severity of the damage for a few days. Methylprednisolone was administered within a few hours of the trauma, but thereâs still some inflammation at the base of the spine. As far as we can tell, he landed on something hard that caused some trauma. We stabilized the spine to prevent any additional damage, but the swelling hasnât gone down as much as weâd like.â
âWill he be able to walk?â
âI canât say this early. Right now, we need to keep him calm and as immobile as possible. We may schedule surgery to go in and remove any debris that could be causing the swelling.â
The doctor walks in to check on Marcel, and I turn to Murphy. âWhat are we going to do? Whatâs he going to do? Oh my God.â
His free arm wraps around my shoulder and he pulls me up against him. âShh. Your brotherâs a tough son of a bitch. Heâs gonna be fine.â
âI know,â I mumble, but I canât stop myself from clinging to his shirt and weeping all over him.
My crying makes Alexa cry so I gather her in my arms, rocking her back and forth until we both calm down.
âHey, Heidi-girl,â Rock calls out, entering the room with Hope. He gives me a kiss on the cheek. âYou must be tired.â
âIâm not leaving.â
The corner of Rockâs mouth quirks up, and he slides his gaze to Murphy. âHeidi, itâs late. Theyâre not going to let you stay in his room overnight.â
Hope settles her arm around my shoulder. âHeâs stable now. Iâve got a room at our house all set up for you and the baby.â
âYou do?â I end up crying again.
Somehow, they talk me into leaving with them. Murphy stays behind at the hospital and some of the guilt for leaving my brother lessens.
Iâm so exhausted, I barely notice the room Hope set up for us. After taking care of Alexa, I fall into a sleep full of dreams where Iâm falling and burning at the same time.
The next morning, I wake completely disoriented. My phone rings at the same time Alexa starts screaming.
âHeidi?â Axelâs voice sounds so distant.
âIâm here. Alexa just woke up and Iâm trying to calm her down.â
âHowâd she do on the flight?â
âOkay.â
âHowâs your brother?â
âBad. Itâs really bad, Axel.â
âShit. Iâm so sorry, baby.â
âThanks. Iâm headed back there in a bit.â
âWhereâd you stay?â
âRock and Hope set up a room for us at their place.â
âOh. That was nice of them.â I can hear the relief in his voice that I didnât sleep under the same roof as Murphy.
We talk a little longer. He doesnât mention coming down on his week off, and I donât bring it up.
Iâm too tired to fight about it or to have my feelings hurt when he says heâs not coming.
Hope and Rock are in the kitchen talking softly at the counter when Alexa and I join them.
âSleep okay, hon
?â Rock asks.
âLike the dead.â I cringe at my choice of words but neither of them say anything.
I donât have much of an appetite, but Rock goes to the trouble of making breakfast, so I choke down some eggs and toast. As weâre finishing up, someone knocks on the door. Rock shouts for them to come in.
âYou donât have to knock, Murphy,â Rock says.
âYes, you do,â Hope corrects.
Murphy chuckles and ambles over, dropping into an empty chair across from me. Exhaustion is etched in every line on his face.
âHowâs Marcel?â I ask.
âNo change really. The doctor wants to do an MRI today.â
âWhy havenât they done it already?â I ask and he shrugs.
Murphyâs gaze slides to Rock, and he jerks his head at the back porch. They get up and leave the table while Hope shakes her head. âYour brotherâs tough, honey. Heâll get through this.â
âIt was hard seeing him like that.â
âI know. I still donât know how weâre going to tell him about Mariella. Iâm not sure what theirâ¦relationship was, but they spent a lot of time together.â
âHeâll take it hard. He was driving, heâll blame himself. It wonât matter that someone ran him off the road.â
Hope gives me a curious look, and I wonder if no one told her the part about Marcel being run off the road.
âI need to make some arrangements for Mariella today. Do you want me to drop you off at the hospital?â she asks.
âI got her, Hope,â Murphy says as he and Rock step back inside.
âIâm with you, Baby Doll,â Rock says, settling his hands on her shoulders. She tips her head back and he presses a kiss to her forehead. Their easy affection makes me feel lonely almost. I donât know how to describe it. Maybe Iâm just tired.
Hope pins me with a motherly stare. âAre you sure youâll be okay?â
âYes.â
âIâll be at the hospital after Iâm done.â
Murphy taps my arm. âLet me know when you two are ready.â By the sound of his voice and look on his face, heâs planning to leave.
âIâm ready. Just let me grab some stuff for her.â
