Page 20 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
âWell, they think he died sometime early Saturday morning.â
âI was with Serena until Sunday late morning. Like twenty-four-seven.â
He rolls his eyes. âYou start that back up?â
My shoulders lift. âMight as well stick with what I know.â
âYeah, well, she give a statement backing you up?â
âFrom what I heard, yeah.â
âChrist, you better not piss her off.â
âNah, she ainât like that. Even if weâ¦sheâs a good girl. She wouldnât lie just to get even with me.â
âAll right. Call her anyway. Keep her happy until this blows over.â
âYeah, okay. Sheâs probably back at Swayâs. Iâll have her ride home with me.â
âGood. Letâs go see Sway. I need to have a chat with him anyway.â
I donât ask. If Rock wants me to know, heâll tell me.
âPrez, thereâs another problem. No one outside of LOKI shouldâve known about our sparring match. Not that quick anyway. But the cops asked me about it almost right away.â
âThat ainât good.â
âNo, but this is worse. They knew Bull and I fought at your wedding. How the fuck would they know about that?â
âDonât know. Itâs not good, though.â
âThey also asked some pointed question about the arson that went down when we visited Sway last year.â
âFuck me.â
âYeah.â
Itâs a full house back at Swayâs place. Every memberâs in the building. I head to my room, looking for Serena. I run into Tawny first.
âYou seen Serena?â I ask.
She waves her hand down the hallway. âTook off with Shadow a few minutes ago,â she says with a fake Iâm sorry face.
Anger, sickness, irritation, one of those emotions settles in the pit of my stomach. Serena and I sure as fuck arenât exclusive, but we did just spend an entire weekend together. Did she really go fuck someone else while I was busy getting questioned at the police station?
Yup.
I didnât realize Rock followed me down the hall, so weâre both standing there when Serena stumbles out of one of the rooms, wiping her mouth and fixing her hair. She freezes when she sees us.
Rockâs hand clamps down on my shoulder. âTalk to her,â he warns me in a low voice, reminding me there are bigger things at stake than my ego. âIâll be out front.â
âMurphy? I didnât realize you were coming back.â
âIâm back.â
âEverything okay?â
âNot really.â I nod at the door. âWho were you with?â
She glances at the floor. âNo one.â
âBullshit. Donât lie, Serena. We ainât a couple.â
âShadow grabbed me out in the living room when the police dropped me off.â
âHe force you?â
âNo. Not really.â
Iâm burning with a number of emotions. Anger, because while I doubt Shadow forced himself on her, Iâm sure she felt like she didnât have any other option and just went along. That blurry gray area of consent goes on in Swayâs clubhouse all the time. That shit doesnât happen in ours. A girl says no or clearly isnât into it, we move on.
âIâm sorry,â I say.
Her eyes widen. âWhy are you sorry?â
âI just am. Come on, I need to talk to you.â
She follows me to my room and leans against the door once weâre inside.
âWhatâd the police ask you?â I ask while I change.
âIf we were together. I told them we were side-by-side all weekend and only left the room to grab food.â
âThanks.â
She shrugs. âItâs the truth.â
âIâm headinâ home in a bit. Do you need a ride?â
âYouâll stillâyouâre not mad at me?â
âIâm not thrilled, but itâs not like I ever gave you a reason to think we were together or something either.â
Tears fill her eyes. Why the fuck do I always seem to make girls cry?
âThanks. Yes, Iâd appreciate a ride home.â
âGive me a few minutes to collect my shit, and then I need to meet up with Rock.â
âOkay.â She turns to open the door.
âNo. Wait here.â Iâm not risking her taking off with someone else. In fact, I want to get her away from here, before someone talks her into changing her story and I lose my alibi.
Call it a gut feeling.
We meet up with Rock in front of the clubhouse.
âIâll follow you up the Thruway,â I say, âbut Iâm gettinâ off at twenty-three to take her home.â
He nods at me. âIâll stick with you.â
Obviously, Rockâs anxious about letting me ride alone. I always trust his instincts. Not that I would question my president anyway.
The ride goes by quick. I pull into Serenaâs apartment complex, and she hesitates after she gets off. âDo you want to come in and talk?â
âI would, hon. But I need to get up to the clubhouse.â I tilt my head at Rockâs SUV patiently waiting by the exit.
âOh, sorry. Yeah. Call me.â
Yeah, not happening.
Although, in her head it might not seem clear where we stand, in mine itâs crystal clear.
Weâre done.
The ride itself is home.
âYou okay, bro?â Teller asks outside Heidiâs hospital room door.
âYeah.â
Havenât seen Heidi in over six months. Not since her wedding day when I laid out my heart to her and she went ahead and married Axel. Teller called to let me know I was an uncle this morning, and I drove straight to the hospital without thinking.
Now, I stop to consider if I can really do this.
Sheâs not mine.
Not my baby she just had.
I still want to see her so bad, I feel it in my bones.
Tellerâs waiting with his hand braced on my shoulder. Waiting to make sure I wonât do anything to upset his baby sister.
âIâm good, brother. I swear it.â
âOkay.â
He pushes the door open and suddenly Iâm not okay. Not at all. Axel nods at us. Heidi glances at me and a pained smile turns the corners of her mouth up.
âHey, Heidi-bug. How you doinâ?â
Her smile turns a little more genuine. âHey, Blake.â
Teller throws himself into a chair across from Heidi, leaving room for me to move closer.
âCongrats, man.â I shake Axelâs hand and try not to choke on the words.
âThanks for coming.â He seems sincere. Thatâs the problem. Canât even hate the guy.
âHey, hon, I want to run down to the cafeteria. You want anything?â Axel asks Heidi.
She raises an eyebrow in a sweet, hopeful expression I remember her using to get her way when she was little. âIce cream sandwich?â
âYou got it.â
He glances at Teller and me. âNeed anything?â
âNah, but Iâll run down with you.â Teller pulls himself out of the chair and slaps my shoulder on the way out.
âSo, where is she?â I ask after they leave.
Heidi gestures to the little rolling crib on the other side of the bed. Been so focused on her I didnât even notice. Walking around the edge of the bed, I stop and stare down.
âOh, shit, sheâs pretty.â
Heidi chuckles.
I guess having me looming over her wakes the baby, and she waves her plump little fists in the air. Heidi reaches over and scoops her up.
âCan I hold her?â
She gives me a cautious look. âYou ever held a baby?â
âYeah, you. When you were little. I was only eight and didnât drop you, so I think I can manage now.â
The memory I offered up doesnât make her laugh like I intended. She sighs instead. Then leans down and presses a kiss to the babyâs cheek. âYou want to meet your uncle Blake, little one?â
S
wallowing over the lump in my throat is impossible.
âMeet Alexa Jade,â she says as she hands the baby over.
âHi, Alexa.â I find myself babbling like an idiot to this teeny-tiny little person Heidi just handed over. âSheâs so tiny.â
Heidiâs silent, so I glance up and find her red-faced, staring at the baby. âShe was a little early.â
By the tone of her voice, it sounds like thereâs more to it than that, but I donât know the right questions for this situation. âSheâs beautiful, Heidi.â
âThank you.â
Alexa settles into my arms, letting me rock her back and forth. âHow do you feel?â I ask Heidi without taking my eyes off the baby.
âTired. Sore. But weâre going to be fine.â
This is fucking weird. I want to hug Heidi and the baby and do everything I can to make sure theyâre safe and protected.
But I canât. Heidiâs married to someone who isnât me and has a baby who isnât mine. Itâs like she went from a child to an adult in the snap of two fingers, and I canât catch up.
This isnât the way I pictured our lives turning out.
âWhat have you been up to, Blake?â
âNot much. I was helping out downstate,â I say with a shrug.
âMarcel told me. Rockâs okay with that?â
âYeah, he understood.â Shit, I wish I hadnât said that.
âAre you coming back?â
Looking down at little Alexaâs sweet, chubby face, I know I wonât be able to stay away any longer. Even if being around her mom and dad kills me. âYeah, I think so.â
âThatâs good.â
âSo, howâd you get a room to yourself?â I finally manage to meet Heidiâs eyes. A smile pulls the corner of her mouth up.
âI work at this hospital.â
âReally? Since when?â
âWell, I interned here over the summer. But they offered me a job after I graduate.â
It takes a second to find my voice again. âThatâs great. Did you like it?â
âI loved it.â
âThink youâll take the job or stay home with Alexa?â
For a second her eyes narrow, and I wait for her to snap at me. âThey understand. Iâm taking this semester off, so Iâll have some time to figure it out. The hospital has a really nice day care for employees. But Axelâs doing well at his job, soâ¦I donât know.â
âAre you happy?â I blurt out.
Her gaze strays to Alexa. âYes.â
Alexa chooses that moment to scream her little head off.
âHoly shit. Some lungs on her.â
âSheâs had people poking and prodding her all morning. Sheâs probably hungry now.â Heidi holds out her arms and I hand the baby to her.
âIâll uh.â I drop into the chair in the corner and stare at the ceiling.
âBlake, Iâm covered.â
âIâm fine.â
Weâre interrupted by Hope opening the door. Her gaze goes right to Heidi. âHi!â She rushes over and coos at the baby before noticing me.
âMurphy! Oh my gosh. When did you get here?â
âLittle while ago. Teller called me this morning.â
âThatâs great. Are you coming up to the property?â
âItâs my next stop.â
âGood. Rock will be so happy to see you.â
âYou came here first?â Heidi asks.
âOf course.â
The corners of her mouth turn up and she holds her hand out for me to grasp. âThank you,â she says. âIâm really happyâ¦it was good to see you. I missed you.â
Hope takes a step away from the bed, giving us some privacy.
âMissed you, too, kid. Iâm glad youâre okayâ¦youâre happy.â I squeeze Heidiâs hand and take another look at Alexa. âIf you need anything, let me know.â
âThank you,â she whispers.
Regret? Relief? Iâm not sure what settles over me as I leave the hospital. I point my bike southwest of Empire on the road to take me home. Half-way there, I take a detour to Fletcher Park, stopping at the overlook to stare at the view of Empire and the surrounding areas below. The last time I was hereâ¦fuck it. Everything reminds me of Heidi. Doesnât matter where I am.
My mindâs blank as I leave the park and take the familiar back roads to the clubhouse. Itâs the only place thatâs ever truly felt like my home. How often will Heidi and the baby come up to visit? Fuck, thatâs gonna hurt every single time I see her.
Iâll have to get over it.
Seeing Murphy again hurt. I feel like Iâve lost one of my best friends. I can never give him what he wants, so pushing him away is for the best.
âIs everything okay?â Hope asks after he leaves.
âYes. It was nice of him to come visit.â
The hospital social worker speed walks into my room. I spoke to her yesterday. Apparently, my age makes me a high-risk mother or something. On top of that, Alexa came earlier than expected, so theyâre concerned about making sure I have enough people to support me when I leave.
âHi, Heidi. How are you feeling?â
âBetter.â
She leans over the bed, checking on Alexa. âShe looks great. Very healthy baby girl.â
âI did everything the doctor told me to.â Iâve gotten a little defensive about everyone acting like Iâm a moron because Iâm only eighteen.
âAre you grandma?â she asks Hope, who scowls at the question.
âNo, this is my aunt. Hope.â
âWell, youâre getting discharged tomorrow. Whatâs your plan?â
Fear spreads through my chest. I donât know if I can do this. My lower lip trembles. âIâm scared to be alone with her. What if I screw something up?â
Nervous laughter bubbles out of Hope. âYouâre not going to screw up, Heidi.â
The social worker doesnât seem to agree. âIt would be better if she had some family to either stay with her or that she could stay with, until she feels more comfortable.â
âMy husband and I can handle it,â I protest.
Hope taps her fingers against the bedside table. âRock and I talked about it earlier. Maybe you, Axel, and the baby should come up and stay at the clubhouse for a couple of weeks. That way there will be people to help you out in the beginning.â
âReally? The guys would let me do that?â
âWell, Rock will bring it up today and see how they feel. You can stay in our old room, so it will be more private. Iâll go up today and clear some of my junk out of your way.â
Tears start rolling down my cheeks. âI donât know what to say, Hope. I canât⦠Iâd feel much better.â
âGood.â She whips out her cell phone and taps out a text. âIâm letting Rock know.â
The social worker seems confused but relieved that I wonât be going home alone.
âSounds good.â She makes some notes on her folder and nods at me. âIâll check back with you tomorrow before you leave.â She hurries out as Axel steps back into the room.
âYour brother had to go back to the clubhouse,â Axel says to me.
âTheyâre having a meeting,â Hope says. She raises an eyebrow. âYou can explain it to Axel.â She leans over and kisses my cheek. âIâm heading home.â
âThank you for everything, Hope.â
After she leaves, Axel pins me with a hard stare. âExplain what to me?â
âHope offered us their old room at the clubhouse for a few weeks after I get out of the hospital.â
His face twists in anger. âFuck that. You did that behind my back?â
Axelâs shifts from happy-about-the-baby to stressed-out got a lot worse toward the end of my pregnancy. So his outburst barely registers. âNo,â I answer calmly. âThe social worker was in here pestering me again about not going home alone. So, Hope offered.â
âFuck her. That social worker doesnât have any say over what we do.â
âCan you try to be reasonable, Axel? Iâm al
ready exhausted. Youâre at work for eleven or twelve hours a dayââ
âIâm working to pay for the baby you just had.â
Ignoring that, I continue with my reasoning. âIf Iâm up at the property, people will be around to help me with the baby.â
With a heavy sigh, he says, âChrist, Heidi. Babies sleep all day. How much help do you need?â
I take a deep breath and count to ten so I donât scream at him.
âThis is all new to me and Iâm scared, okay?â
âYouâre doing fine. And itâs not as if Hope or Trinity know what to do with a baby, either.â
Heâs not getting it. âBut at least I wonât be alone.â
Axel pinches the bridge of his nose. âIt more than doubles my drive to work.â
âI donât want to move up there permanently. Just for a few weeks until I get used to things.â
âWhy donât you ask Hope to come stay with us?â
âThatâs not fair to her. And our apartment is barely big enough for us and the baby. Whereâs she supposed to sleep?â
âOkay. But just for a week or two. Iâm not comfortable up there.â
âI know.â
âPromise me this isnât just so you can be around Murphy.â
Is he kidding? Except for today, I havenât spoken to Murphy in months. I cut an important person out of my life to keep the peace with my husband, and he still wonât let it go. âThatâs so stupid, Iâm not even going to answer it.â
Axel stares at me and exhales. âIâm sorry. Iâm exhausted.â
Like giving birth was a tropical vacation. âNo kidding.â
âYou know why itâs weird for me to be up there, right?â
âI understand. But theyâre still my family.â
âIâm your family now.â
âYes.â I answer with more patience than Iâm feeling. âBut theyâre my family, too.â
Why does he always seem to forget that fact?
When I walk into the clubhouse, Rock has all the members currently living thereâexcept Z because no one has been able to find himâassembled downstairs. Trinity, Mariella, and Hope are also there. If there were a party or church going on, it wouldnât be unusual. Middle of the afternoon on a weekday, itâs a little odd.
âEverything okay, prez?â
