âOh. Thatâs good news.â
Lucas leans over and slaps Axelâs leg. âYou should come to Alaska with us after graduation. I can totally hook you up with a job on my uncleâs oil rig.â
I snort, because obviously thatâs a joke, right? Lucas shifts his gaze to me. âIâm serious. Even the entry-level jobs pay really well.â He turns and thumps Axelâs arm âBut, youâve got a special skill set with the welding and mechanicsâmy uncle would kill to get you on his crew.â
âYouâre seriously moving to Alaska?â I raise an eyebrow at Penny and she nods.
âYeah, itâll be fun.â
âWell, all our family is here. I donât think taking a newborn to Alaska makes a lot of sense.â
Axelâs still quiet, so I elbow him in the ribs.
âWhat? Oh, yeah.â
âSorry, Heidi. I wasnât thinking about the baby,â Lucas says.
âItâs going to be a big adjustment.â What an understatement.
Penny cocks her head. âAre you going to finish school?â
âDuh. Of course.â
Axel turns and raises an eyebrow. Thatâs right, we havenât talked about our plans for after the baby comes.
âWeâll have to find daycare or a sitter or something,â I mumble.
âYou guys have plenty of time to figure it all out.â
Somehow, it doesnât seem like it.
By the next time we sit down for church, no oneâs worried about Heidiâs wedding. Except me. And maybe Teller. I donât know, because he hasnât mentioned it again.
I canât dwell on it, though, or itâll drive me nuts.
The need to be on the road consumes me. Rock knows it and promised me he was working on something. I appreciate it, because at least then Iâll be doing something for my club instead of just going off on a pity joyride.
We go through the agenda the same way we do every time. Rock grills each of the officers. Everyone does their part for the club and does it well.
âNeed more bodies at Furious?â Rock asks Wrath once weâve gone over everything else.
âNah. Murphyâs been a big help while Jakeâs been out. Iâm gettinâ busier, so if you donât need him anywhere else, Iâd like to keep him on permanently.â
Rock glances at me with a raised eyebrow.
Fuck. Originally, I wanted to get out of working at Crystal Ball because I realized how much it bothered Heidi. Since that doesnât matter anymore, I could go back. Truth is Iâd rather keep working at the gym with Wrath. I like helping him out. The work is more challenging. And Iâm in the best shape Iâve ever been in.
At the moment, though, I need some time away from everything. Distance. Wrath should understand that better than anyone.
Rock seems to read the dilemma Iâm working through in my head. âLong-term, yeah. Weâll find someone else for CB.â
Ravage raises his hand, waving it in the air to get Rockâs attention. âRight here, prez.â
Rock chuckles. âYeah, yeah. Simmer the fuck down.â He turns back to Wrath. âCan you spare Murphy for the next couple weeks? The club needs him for something.â
Wrath raises an eyebrow. âOkay.â Rock may have phrased it as a request, but we all know it wasnât.
Sparky practically bounces in his seat trying to get Rockâs attention. âYou sending Murphy to Arizona for me?â
Our president doesnât hesitate. âYes.â He points to Dex. âYou up for a trip?â
While Iâd been hoping for some solitude, I get why Rock doesnât want me riding solo.
âFuck, yeah.â
Sparky narrows his eyes at Dex. âYouâre there on business. Not to fuck around.â
A shocked hush falls over the table. All eyes are on Dex while we wait to see his comeback. Finally, his mouth slides into a sneer. âYes, sir.â
Sparky settles back in his chair. âSorry. Itâs just that this is important.â
Rock sighs and sits back. âSparky, why donât you explain.â
Our mad-scientist, weed-growing brother sits up, hands flailing in the air. âOkay. Okay. So, you know our friends in Arizona started up a grow-op, right? The dude whoâs overseeing it is an old buddy of mine. Heâs got this crazy amazing strain from Nigeria. Real rare stuff. Seven times the THC for a quick highâ¦â
I try not to let my eyes glaze over. When Sparky gets talking about plants, he can get pretty in-depth.
âSparky,â Rock warns, redirecting our favorite stoner.
âYeah, yeah. Sorry. So heâs got this mega-awesome strain. Iâve got our Deepest Gray that Iâve bred. Weâre going to swap clones.â
âYouâre gonna let someone have one of your masterpieces?â Z asks with only a hint of sarcasm.
Sparkyâs face screws up into a scowl. âThis shit is worth it. Theyâre far enough away that itâs not going to impact our business.â
Rock tosses his hands up in a what-the-fuck-ever gesture. âYou wanna vote on the swap?â he asks Z. âItâs club property.â
Zâs shaking his head before Rock even finishes the question. âNo. I trust Sparkyâs judgment on this. Iâm surprised, thatâs all.â
I feel like I missed something. âSo, what does this have to do with me?â
Brother has nerve, because Sparky rolls his eyes. âI need you to transport the clones.â
âYou canât just mail some seeds back and forth?â Bricks asks.
Sparky slants a look in Brickâs direction. âNo. Seeds wonât cut it. No. No mail. Federal. Easy peasy.â
I look to Rock to interpret that answer and he shrugs. Across the table, Wrathâs leaning back in his chair with his hand on his chin, fingers covering the laughter on his lips.
âSo, hereâs where Iâll explain the risks involved, since Sparky seems to be forgetting that part,â Rock says. Sparky waves his hands in the air and grumbles about the Feds. âHow many plants?â Rock asks.
âTwelve.â Sparky points at Dex, then me. âSix each.â
Rock nods. âOkay, so one to forty-nine plants, the penalty is the same. Five years and up to a million dollar fine.â
Ouch.
Iâve gone on plenty of drops where the amounts could land me in prison a lot longer than five years, but those are low risk since theyâre local and quick. This is a cross-country trip through areas where we have no influence.
Still, I think the risk is pretty low.
âDoes the club need these plants, Sparky?â I ask.
He sits up and nods, taking the questions seriously. âItâll help us meet the higher GSC demand and give us a new strain to offer that canât be found anywhere else in the northeast.â
âWe already have the best stuff in the northeast,â Wrath says dryly. âThis shit make that big a difference?â
I think Sparkyâs feelings are hurt by the question. âYes,â he answers. âThis is a high-producing plant, so we might be able to get ahead and reopen our western NY deal, too.â
Yeah, backing out of that deal made us look like amateurish assholes. But Locoâs Green Street Crew has us by the throat, demanding everything we produce. If we can get some breathing room that would be good for the whole club.
âIâm in.â
âMe, too,â Dex says.
âYou do realize itâs almost winter, right?â Z asks.
Dex blows off the weather concern. âFuck, itâs still like sixty-five degrees.â
Now, this is my area of expertise. âWeatherâs clear for the next week. That gets us to Arizona. If thereâs some freak storm, we can always rent a truck and trailer the bikes back.â
âThree days,â Sparky says.
âWhat?â
âThree days. The clones cannot be on the road longer than that.â
âJesus Christ, itâs a day and a half ride at least. And thatâs without any stops, you prick.â
âOh no, you need to stop to check the plants, water them, breathe on themâ¦â Sparky keeps listing tasks, while Dex and I roll our eyes.
&
nbsp; âYou can stay down there long as you want. But the drive back? Three days.â
âSparky, be reasonable,â Rock says.
âMaybe four if you promise to talk to them.â
âIâll sing them a motherfuckinâ ballad if it makes you happy, brother,â I tell him.
Everyone cracks up. Even Sparky.
We wrap up our meeting and after everyone leaves, Rock motions for Dex and me to stay.
âYou sure youâre all right with this?â he asks me.
âIâm a big boy. Iâll be fine.â
A slow smirk turns the corner of his mouth up. He sits back and regards both of us carefully.
âDex, you good?â
âIâm in, prez.â
Once weâre cleared by Rock to leave, we head to the basement where we are treated to a lengthy botany lesson. âSparky, Iâm never gonna remember all this. Canât you write it down?â
He throws a glare at me. âNothing in writing. Iâll Skype with him.â
âThatâs safer?â
Another fuck-off stare.
âWhatever. Just show us what you need us to do.â
After what feels like a hundred hours later, Sparky finally releases us.
âMorning?â Dex asks as we head upstairs.
âYeah.â
âLooking forward to a change of scenery?â
âFuck yeah.â
âAre you sure I look okay?â I ask for the third time.
Axel runs his gaze over my green sweater, jeans, and boots. âDo you have a dress?
Although Iâve outgrown my tomboy-who-refuses-to-wear-dresses phase, the question still annoys me. Iâm not a fan of being told what to wear.
âNo. Itâs cold out.â
âYou look fine. Come on, my mother will be more annoyed if weâre late.â
Goody. Canât wait.
I met Axelâs parents once. When he graduated from high school. They werenât impressed with me then, and I donât think theyâre thrilled weâre still together. Definitely not happy about us living together.
Wait until we tell them weâre getting married.
I spent a couple afternoons studying at Axelâs house before we officially started dating. While the old Victorian I lived in with my grandmother was probably as big, it had more characterâstuff that needed fixing. Axelâs parents live in one of those generic, expensive, perfect McMansion types of houses. He walks us up the sidewalk, with a hand on my back, as if heâs worried I might try to run away if he lets go.
Maybe I would.
âHi, honey,â Mrs. Ryan fusses, kissing Axelâs cheek like she hasnât seen him in a million years. She turns her chilly gaze my way and nods. âHeidi.â
What, no kiss for me, Lorraine?
Iâve never been a picky eaterâcouldnât afford to be if I wanted to survive. My brother hunts, so Iâm not squeamish. Iâve eaten lots of Bambis and Thumpers over the years. But the bloody red roast his mother serves turns my stomach.
âI canât eat that,â I whisper in Axelâs ear. Never mind how unappetizing it looks. It canât be good for the baby.
A wave of unpleasantness rolls through my belly. Nope. Definitely not eating that.
âHeidi?â Mr. Ryan points to the roast.
âUh, can I have my piece cooked a little longer?â
His motherâs face twists into a scowl, as if I spit on the table instead of wanting to avoid a case of E. coli. She huffs as she reaches over and snatches my plate away. âI can do it, Mrs. Ryan. Donât go to any trouble,â I say, following her into the kitchen.
âItâs fine,â she says without looking at me.
My stomach lurches again and I hurry to the bathroom, making it just in time to throw up in private.
When I return, everyoneâs waiting for me. I suppose it will be obvious that Iâm knocked up now, but no one says anything.
The beef still doesnât look good, but I pick at it, cut it into tiny pieces and push it around my plate.
His motherâs voice cuts into my thoughts. âWhy is she wearing my motherâs ring?â
Axel takes my hand and gives it a squeeze. âWell, thatâs what we came here to tell you. Weâre getting married in January.â
She pins Axel with a flinty glare. âYou gave her my motherâs ring?â
Interesting she has no comment on the wedding.
âYeah,â Axel snaps. âGram gave it to me to give to my future wife.â He points at me. âHeidi.â
âCongratulations,â his father finally says.
âThank you.â
No one asks why weâre getting married. Or where. His mother doesnât ask about my plans.
After dinner, I try to be a good guest and help her clear the table. In the kitchen, she whirls around and glares at me. âHow did you talk my son into marrying you?â
Stunned from the accusation, I canât come up with anything more intelligent than, âWhat?â
âFor reasons I canât comprehend, my son is obsessed with you.â
âHe loves me. I love him,â I answer weakly.
She shakes her head as if that canât possibly be true. âYouâve done nothing but drag him down since he met you, but this is beyond comprehension.â
âAxel wants⦠He proposed to me.â
âOnly because you convinced him. Heâd never marry you if you hadnât talked him into it.â
Her words strike hard. Will Axel end up hating me? Hating our baby?
âYou havenât heard a thing Iâve said, have you?â she screams at me.
âMom!â Axel shouts, storming into the kitchen. âEnough.â He slips an arm around my shoulders and I lean into him for support. âWeâre getting married whether you like it or not. We want you and Dad to be thereââ
âLike hell,â she snaps.
âThatâs too bad. I guess youâll see pictures of the wedding.â
She turns her ice-cold glare on me. âYouâre pregnant, arenât you?â
My stomach drops.
âWhy canât you get rid of it? Why do you have to ruin my sonâs life?â she yells.
Axelâs arm tightens around me. âThatâs it. Weâre leaving. If thatâs your attitude, we donât want you around our child.â
Iâm so relieved when weâre finally in the car driving away, I burst into tears.
âIâm sorry,â Axel says quietly, placing his hand on my leg.
âAm I ruining your life?â I ask.
He takes a long time to answer, and Iâm not exactly reassured when he finally does.
âNo. Itâs just going in a different direction than I planned.â
Dex doesnât question me when I explain the two-hour detour I want to take into Arkansas to steer clear of the Kansas border.
âThis is your show, brother.â
Iâm pinging with the need to get on the road, but Wrath insists we have breakfast before leaving.
âThis is all getting a little too happy family,â I grumble as Wrathâs big hand settles on my neck and steers me toward the dining room.
âBullshit. You love it.â
After breakfast, Sparky oversees the loading of the clones into our hard bags. I hate the look of the stretched bags, but they fit our needs. I designed a tray to fit over the plants. It wonât stand up to a serious search, but it provides some cover.
Sparky, naturally objects.
âSweet pannies, Murphy,â Z jokes, bumping my arm.
âTrying to blend in as much as possible.â
âChrist, youâre gonna make us look like a bunch of pussies when you roll into Romeoâs compound with those dressers.â
I punch him back. âYou want to join us? Butch us up a little, ya prick.â
He glances at the house. Then back at us. âFuck it. Yeah. Iâll ride ahead, like the lone outlaw while you two look like a couple of RUBs touring the countryside.â
âFuck you.â Iâm laughing as I insult my brother, so heâs not put off one bit.
While Z jogs into the house t
o grab some stuff, Rock strolls over. âSomethingâs up his ass lately. Canât sit still for more than a day.â
âYeah, I noticed.â
âKeep an eye on him.â
I donât have an answer for that. Never thought Iâd see the day when Rock was asking me to look after Z.
Hope rushes in as weâre about to go and gives me a fierce hug. âHave fun. Be careful,â she whispers in my ear. I think she says it to Dex and Z, too, so Iâm not insulted. Sparky takes her hand, squeezing it tight as we roll out. He must be nearing a meltdown watching us whisk his babies away.
Trinity doesnât fuck around when it comes to wedding planning. Although the theme of the wedding seems to be broke bride on a budget, she manages to make everything beautiful instead of pitiful.
âThank you so much, Trinity.â
âYouâre welcome, honey.â
Iâve known Trinity for years. Hated her for years, too. But the more time I spend at the clubhouse, the more I see what a vital role she plays here. Maybe not as vital as she used to, but important.
âHas, uh, Murphy said anything?â I canât look her in the eye while I ask. Itâs all too weird, but I need to know how he is. We havenât spoken in so long. He probably hates me.
She glances down at her hands. âNo. Heâs on a run.â
âOh. Where?â
âSouthwest.â
âOh.â
I take a few deep breaths before asking my next question. âWas he upset?â
She finally meets my eyes. âProbably.â
âTrinity, I neverââ
âThereâs my girl,â Wrathâs low voice startles me, and I find him creeping up behind Trinity. She squeals and jumps out of her chair. I glance away while they greet each other with so much affection it makes me blush. If Wrath can get over the past, then I have no business being mad at Trinity. Especially when sheâs always tried so hard to be nice to me. Not because she wanted something from meâshe was already plenty close with my brotherâbut because I was part of the family.
They approach the table with their arms around each other, and itâs weird to see Uncle Wrath soâ¦content. Weird, but nice.
âHey, Heidi-girl.â He pats me on the head and musses my hair. âWhose wedding are you working on?â
