Page 9 of White Heat (Lost Kings MC 5)
Christ, her big green eyes shining with terror are all I can see. âI canât do this,â she says.
The way sheâs struggling to stay calm even though horror is clearly written over her face, shreds my insides. âI know, Baby Doll. Itâs okay. Call Glassman,â I reassure her as smoothly as possible.
Wrath moves in behind her, settling his hands on her shoulders. My brother nods as if he already knows the thought forming on my tongue. âKeep her safe,â I order anyway.
One of the officers pats me down. âWeapons?â
âNo.â
He yanks my keys and cell phone out of my pocket and turns to Hope. âMiss, you want to take these?â One of the other officers steps between us, stopping her from getting too close, and hands over my stuff.
âWhere are you taking him, officer?â
Piece of shit hesitates before answering. Itâs not a complicated question. âYou canât ride with us, Miss.â
âNo kidding,â Hope snaps. âHe needs counsel present, and right now, thatâs me.â
Absolutely fucking not.
Faced with the thought of her following me to the police station, I manage to find my presidential voice. âTake her home, Wrath.â
The cop at my back presses his hand against my shoulder blades. âShut up.â
Hope, whips open my cell phone and takes a picture. âI know exactly what condition he left in, officers. He better arrive at the station the same way,â she warns before slipping my phone into her pocket. I both love and want to strangle her at the same time. Wrath wraps his hand around her arm. âCome on, Hope.â
She attempts to shake him off. âNo. Where are you taking him?â
One of the other troopers rounds the car. âBarracks. You can meet us there.â
âCould you be more specific?â my courageous little spitfire snaps. Under any other circumstance, I might laugh at the way sheâs so brazen with six armed officers.
They ignore her. Someone grips my arm and shoves me into the back seat.
As if Iâd been watching this scene unfold from above, my body jolts and panic grips me. This is it. I struggle to draw in a breath. This is really happening.
âTake care of her. Do not let her out of your sight,â I choke out with a lot more calm than Iâm feeling inside. Wrath nods and pulls my girl back. Those are the last words Iâm able to get out before the door slams in my face. No chance to reassure Hope. Tell her how fucking much I love her. Beg her to go home and do what Wrath asks her to do so I know sheâs safe.
I have to twist to see out the window. Catch sight of her as she falls back against Wrath and he holds her up. âItâs gonna be okay, baby. Youâll be okay,â I whisper to myself.
Trinity and Z form a circle around her. Iâm absolutely gutted leaving her this way. The pain in my arms and shoulders is nothing compared to the wrenching in my chest.
My eyes close and I struggle to take deep breaths. Sheâll be taken care of. The brotherhood weâve worked so hard to create is solid. She wonât be alone. I have to assure myself sheâs taken care of before I can even deal with the bullshit Iâm about to drown in.
Fuck. Even though I trust every one of my brothers, cold sweat and fear crawl over my skin. Whatever this nightmare Iâve walked into turns out to be, it means Iâm leaving my girl alone.
In an instant my lifeâs been ripped out of my control. Hopeâs become the most precious thing in my life and now I have to trust her safety to others.
CHAPTER EIGHT
I canât believe this is actually happening. A few seconds ago I was about to finally put my property patch on my girl. Instead Iâm watching my best friend get shoved into the back of a police car and driven away.
In my hands Hopeâs shaking so hard, her teeth click.
âTake care of her. Do not let her out of your sight.â
I have my orders from my president and I plan to follow them. Getting Rock out of jail and keeping everyone safe are my only two objectives from now on.
The papers in Hopeâs hands flutter as she starts to break down.
She turns and buries her face against my chest.
I donât know what to do to comfort her, so I rub my hand over her back. âItâs gonna be okay, Hope. Good girl, keeping it together. Itâd drive him crazy if the last thing he saw was you crying.â
My words must flip some internal switch for her. She pulls away, staring up at me. âWe have to go.â Her voice comes out clear and determined. She may be falling apart on the inside, but outside, sheâs icy calm.
âCall Glassman,â she orders Z.
âAlready on it,â he answers as he walks up toward the house, Trinity following behind.
My hands squeeze her shoulders. âHope, I need to get you home.â
âLike fuck,â she snaps. Pulling out of my grasp, she marches over to the Empire PD car still blocking the driveway.
âWhere are they taking him?â she demands.
The cops feed her a line of bullshit and she argues with them for a minute before turning her attention toward Rockâs car.
Fuck no.
Her intentionâs obvious. She places her hand over her pocket and storms up the driveway. I race over the grass to catch up. I must sound like a bull bearing down on her because she breaks into a run. Sheâs in the driverâs seat of Rockâs SUV, adjusting the seat, before I reach her. I narrowly miss getting my fingers caught in the door when I jerk it out of her hand.
âOut.â
Son of a bitch, if she doesnât jab the key in the ignition and turn it over.
âThatâs a fucking murder indictment they handed me. He needs a lawyer, and until you find Glassman and get his ass down there, itâs me. So either get in or get out of my way, Wrath.â
Fuck! âMove over. Iâll drive.â
âIâm not falling for that.â She slams the car into gear. âIn or out, Wrath?â
âGodfuckingdammit! Z get over here!â
I donât even have to explain myself. Heâs at my side, throwing open the back door and sliding in. âMurphy, get the girls home. Get everyone to the clubhouse,â I shout while I round the front of the vehicle and jump in on the other side. My doorâs not even closed before Hope takes off.
âUh, Hope, are you planning to ram the cop car?â Z asks.
By the expressions on their useless, donut-munching faces, the copsâre wondering the same thing.
âNope,â she says and jerks the steering wheel to the left, driving over the lawn.
âSorry, Bricks,â she mutters as she plows through the ornamental bushes Bricks recently planted around the mailbox.
âThey said barracks, but there are three fucking trooper barracks between here and Slater County Jail,â she says.
If she wasnât frustrating the fuck out of me by not listening, Iâd be proud as hell at her determination to get to her man. âWhy Slater?â
She tosses the indictment at me. âThatâs what the caption says. The warrantâs out of Slater County.â
Z curses.
âSlow down, Hope,â I caution. She doesnât answer, but she eases off the gas.
âIâll start with Scotland Ave. Itâs closest.â
Rockâs not there. Of course the cops are completely useless and pretend to have no idea what weâre talking about.
Hope slams out through the front door, back into the parking lot. âShit!â She turns to us. âI donât know if we should wait here or try another one.â
Shaking my head, I grab her hand to keep her still. âHope, I have to get you home.â
Zâs phone stops us from arguing. âItâs Glassman.â
He answers the phone, while Hope motions for him to hand it over. Her gaze darts between me and the car before finally landing on me. She motions for me to get in the driverâs seat, but still wonât give me the God damned keys.
Any minute Hope will collapse into tears or something, right?
Nope. Sheâs all business as she takes the phone out of Zâs hand.
/>
âMr. Glassman, this is Hope Kendall. We met at a CLE a few years back. Iâm Rockâs fiancée.â She pauses while I guess Glassman is absorbing the fact that one of his best clients is marrying a lawyer. If the situation werenât so dire, Iâd laugh.
After the introductions, she fires off a bunch of details at the clubâs lawyer. âItâs a two-count indictment. Slater County, but troopers and Empire PD showed up.â
Slater County. Wolf Knights territory.
âMurder twoâ¦I donât know. Grand Jury. Sealed. No, thereâs a witness. No, the name is sealedâ¦Yes, but not until closer to trial.â
Witness. No fucking way.
âAn Isaac âCaboâ Cruzâ¦No, I have no idea. They give a time frame, so I donât knowâ¦Noâ¦Iâm notâ¦Mr. Glassman, Iâm not a criminal attorneyâ¦Not something of this magnitudeâ¦Okay. Whatever you need. Iâll bring you a retainer right now if youâ¦Good. Will you go find him? Arraignâ¦forty-eightâ¦no⦠Bail? Murder two. Unlikely, no?â
Sheâs silent listening to whatever Glassman has to say.
âWe already tried the Scotland Ave. barracks. He wasnât there and no one would tell us anything.â I canât hear the exact words, but from the tone of his voice, Glassmanâs pretty pissed. While sheâs distracted, I ease the keys out of her hands.
âThatâs fine. Rock wanted us to go home. So if youâre going to track him down now, thatâs what Iâll do. But call us as soon as you hear something.â
Thank fucking fuck.
âAnd, Mr. Glassman, I want you to understand something, Rock and I will be getting married in a few months. I wonât be doing it inside a jail. No falling through the cracks on this. If your calendarâs full, pull in other associates to help you. No matter how scary you think Rock and his brothers are, Iâll be your worst nightmare. Do we understand each other?â
I donât think Iâve ever been prouder.
Guilt worms through my stomach as I keep picturing Hopeâs anxious face over and over. Weâre driving who-the-fuck-knows-where. The officers wonât say a fucking word.
Over their radio a call comes in. âThe girlfriendâs throwing a fitââ
One of the officers turns the volume down and murmurs into the radio low enough that I canât make out every word. The few words I can decipher sound like Hope took off after me.
Any other time, Iâd shake my head, imagining Wrathâs agitation. Now, the apprehension in my gut intensifies. I want her at the clubhouse where sheâs safe, not running around Empire searching for me.
We end up driving for much longer than seems necessary. Eventually, they take me to a trooper barracks for questioning.
A bunch of photographs of the same dead, bloated body are thrown in front of me.
Jesus Christ. Itâs a battle to keep my face neutral.
âIâd like to call my lawyer now.â
âYeah, weâll get you a call in a minute.â The officer keeps lining up photos. âIsaac âCaboâ Cruz? Ring a bell?â
Actually, no it doesnât.
And then it does. I lean over and take another look at one of the photos. There. The bodyâs decomposed but I can make out the edge of a Vipers tat.
Motherfucking Ulfric.
âNo,â I answer in the most bored tone I can come up with. This is going to shit real fucking fast. While I know Hope has always said not to say a word to the cops, itâs harder than it sounds and ânoâ seems pretty harmless.
âYou sure? Heâs one of your Viper buddies. Oh, wait. Youâre not buddies at all. Your gangs are at war all the time.â
âYou watch too much television.â
âYeah. Yeah. I know. Youâre just president of a club. A club full of honest, misunderstood, guys who happen to love motorcycles.â
I fake an aw, shucks smile and shrug.
âWell, sorry, prez. Weâve got an eye witness who saw you with the victim right around the time the ME guesses he went in the water.â
Now Iâm pissed. âYou got me down here on a motherfuckinâ guess?â
See, this is a problem if they canât give me a narrower time frame. I know exactly when Ulfric murdered Cabo and carelessly dumped his body in the Hudson River. The first night Hope spent with me. Sheâand my entire clubâare my alibi. But how the fuck do I know when he died, unless I was involved with his death?
Which technically I wasnât.
I found out about the murder a day later. Didnât give a single fuck about it. Still donât. Except that my freedomâs at stake over it. Not that Iâd rat Ulfric out. Thatâs just not what we do. I could choke the life out of the sloppy fuck right now, but I wonât speak his name to the cops.
Even though Iâm sitting here for a murder I didnât commit.
Caboâs brother on the other hand. No oneâs ever finding that body. Iâd laugh at the irony of the whole fucking mess if I could.
This supposed eyewitness is a problem though. I never even met Cabo. Ulfric and I look nothing alike. So either someoneâs confused or someoneâs lying and setting me up.
Thatâs a big fucking problem.
âMembers of his club say Cabo made the trip up here specifically to see you about the disappearance of his brother. You wouldnât know anything about that, would you?â
Inside, fear rattles me down to my bones. A murder conviction. A long stretch of prison time. On the outside, I execute another careless shrug
âKeep shrugging at me, asshole.â
âCan I call my lawyer now?â
CHAPTER NINE
Hopeâs courage is short-lived. When we get to the clubhouse, sheâs as limp as a wet noodle. Z and I have to help her upstairs.
âCall me if you hear something, no matter what,â she whispers before closing the door.
âThis is so fucked,â Z says as we head to the war room.
Within the next hour, everyoneâs assembled in the war room. Not sure what weâre dealing with, Bricks brought Winter and their kids to the clubhouse. Teller brought Heidi. Dex brought up Swan and a few other girls who are known to associate with us.
Itâs a full house and itâs somber as fuck with everyone worried about Rock.
Trinity takes care of finding rooms for our extra guests. She also explains to the girls to keep tits and ass covered at all times in all common areas, since thereâre kids here.
âSwan wonât be a problem. The other two should be fine too,â she assures me as I place a kiss on her forehead.
âYou okay?â
âNo. Not at all. Should I go check on Hope?â
Fuck. I donât fuckinâ know. Part of me doesnât like leaving her alone at a time like this, part of me thinks thatâs probably what she wants right now.
âGo up and knock. See if sheâs okay. Weâre gonna be at the table for a few.â
Zâs phone goes off as soon as we all sit at the table. âGlassman.â
âAnswer it.â
Murphy offers to go grab Hope.
Z sets the phone in the middle of the table and puts it on speaker. âWho am I talking to?â Glassman asks.
Iâm the one who answers. âThe whole club.â
Glassman mutters and curses and I know heâs pissed about confidentiality bullshit. But I donât fuckinâ care right now.
âLook, I just wanted to update you. I canât find him. They havenât brought him in to Slater County for processing yet. Best guess is heâs at one of the trooper barracks.â
âMotherfucks!â Z slams his fist into the table.
âThere are at least three stations they could have taken him to between his house and Slater County jail. Iâll try Scotland Ave. again.â
âWhat the fuck?â I grumble. This is a nightmare.
âHeâs probably being questioned. But he knows better than to talk without me there. My guess is theyâre dragging their heels in letting him have his phone call.â
Murphy leads Hope in and I point for her to sit in Rockâs chair.
âCan they do that?â I ask.
âIt
âs the cops. Theyâll do whatever the fuck they want,â Glassman answers.
I risk a glance at Hope. Her eyes are dry, but her jawâs tight, cheeks red and sheâs the one who looks ready to commit murder.
âItâs Hope, Mr. Glassman. Will you continue looking for him?â
âYes. Iâve got myself and one of my associates trying to track him down. Rock knows my cell number. Honestly, Hope, thereâs nothing you can do right now. Try to get some rest. I might need you to come down and post bail first thing in the morning.â
âYou think theyâll give him bail?â
âI donât know. But Iâll fight for it.â
âMake sure you do.â
Get some rest my ass. How the hell am I supposed to sleep or even breathe without Rock next to me? Without knowing where he is? If heâs okay? Harsh sobs tear out of my chest as soon as Iâm in our room alone. This time thereâs no one there to keep me upright, and I slide down until my ass hits the floor and bawl.
What am I going to do? Is Rock okay? I should be out trying to find him, but Wrath made it clear leaving the clubhouse isnât an option. Wrath took control, barking out orders to everyone left and right. Z handled everything else. All this time, I never thought to ask Rock whoâd be left in charge if heâ
More tears flow down my cheeks. The thought of sleeping in our bed alone rips me to shreds. My heart splinters at the memory of his wrists bound behind his back as heâs shoved into the police car.
In the hallway I hear some of the guys. I concentrate on breathing deep and drying my face. Crying wonât get Rock out of jail. From now until heâs home with me, thatâs all I plan to focus on.
While I was downstairs, I scanned in a copy of the indictment and sent it to Glassmanâs office. I left a copy with the guys and stuffed my copy in my pocket. Now, I slide it out, unfold it and study the words until they make sense.
Some guyâCabo. Pulled out of the Hudson River weeks ago. A witness came forward, swears they saw Rock with the victim around the time the medical examiner estimates the body was dumped in the river.
What kind of crap is this?
A sketchy eyewitness and a medical examinerâs guess. Are they kidding?
