âA little. Happy though.â I lift my chin at Jake. âTrin do your hair and makeup?â
He throws up two middle fingers. âDonât be jealous âcause your girl thinks Iâm cover material and youâre not.â
My gaze drops to Trinity, and I let out a snicker. âKept my secret, huh?â
âYup.â
âSeen Twitch?â
âNot yet. Itâs early for him, isnât it?â she asks as sheâs bending over to put her camera away. I should be professional, but I own the fucking gym, so I help myself to a squeeze of Trinityâs ass. She jumps and squeals.
âJesus Christ, get a room,â Jake bitches as he approaches us. âYou done with me Trinity?â
âI think so. We got a lot of good stuff.â
âCool. Let me know how it turns out.â He taps my arm on his way to the locker room. Before I have a chance to talk to Trinity, I get interrupted. Then Iâm dealing with members until my kids show up for class. I set Twitch up to talk with Z about following Gabriella. Kid just needed to hear the word âstripperâ to sign on to that gig.
Trin sticks around the whole time. I get glimpses of her hanging out in my office every now and then. Might be sappy as fuck, but I love having her here.
CHAPTER SIX
Now that the fuckery with Lexiâs over with, Iâm hoping we can put the whole sex video to rest. Permanently. Go on with our lives like it never happened.
Other than giving us grief over harassing Lexiâand hell, Iâm pretty fucking sure Hopeâs the only woman in the world who would worry about that under the circumstancesâsheâs been quiet. Thinking about her indignant face back at the club twists my mouth up.
âWhat are you laughing about?â Hope asks.
âYou.â
âMe? Why?â
Out of the corner of my eye I catch her pouting and I reach over to take her hand. âNothing bad. Youâre fucking sweet. Love you.â It was on the tip of my tongue to say exactly what Iâd been picturing, but I catch myself at the last minute. Better to drop it.
âI love you too.â She squeezes my hand.
After a few stops on the way home, weâre not even back at the clubhouse for fifteen minutes when Z calls. Enough time for me to hustle Hope upstairs. My greedy hands are about to strip her down when my phone goes off. She chuckles when she sees whoâs calling and passes my phone over. âFucker has the worst timing,â I grumble.
âWhat?â No pleasant greeting for Z this afternoon.
âWe got a situation.â
âWhat now?â
âI sat Gabby down when she came in for her shift, just a general discussion about stuff going missing, keeping phones in lockers, shit like that. Oh, and I took Hopeâs advice and had Willow sit in on it.â
A short chuckle eases out of me and I flick my gaze at Hope. âIâll let her know. So, whatâs the situation?â
âShe flipped the fuck out. Started cursing me out and saying I was accusing her of somethingâwhich I didnât.â
âWhat the fuck?â
âYeah, I know. So, I sent her home for the night. Told her to calm down and come back with a better attitude.â
âWhat does any of this have to do with me?â
âRansom called. Heâs all pissed weâre not giving his girls a fair shake. He wants to talk to you.â
âMotherfuckingsonofabitch. Iâm done dealing with this fuck.â
âI hear you. He wanted to meet over the border. I said no. So, heâs coming here.â
âAre you fucking serious?â
âI told him he can bring one guy. Killa probably. And thatâs it.â
I glance at Hope again. My end of the conversation has her watching me with an intent expression.
âFine. When?â
âSeven.â
âFuck me. Did you callââ
âWrathâs over at Furious. Heâll be here in a few. Murphyâs here. Iâll call Dex, Bricks, and ask the nomads to stick around.â
âGood. I want everyone laid back and chill, but enough to make an impression. Iâll track down Ravage and have him ride with me.â
âDirty side down, brother.â
âSomeoneâs pessimistic.â
Z laughs, short and clipped. âJust get your ass down here in one piece, prez. I donât want to deal with this fuck on my own. Otherwise Iâm gonna end up burying him in our basement.â
âIâm okay with that.â
âEverything okay?â Hope asks after Iâm done with the call.
âSorry, Baby Doll. I need to run back to Crystal Ball.â
âOkay.â
The atmosphere at Crystal Ball when I arrive can only be described as tense. All the girls seem anxious, even though they shouldnât have any idea whatâs going on.
Butcher frisks Ransom and Killa at the door. Since Butch isnât one of our local guys, I can pretend I didnât know he was going to do such a thing to my âguests.â
I donât invite them into the back office. We sit at a table in the back corner. Theyâre seated with their backs to the stage.
Ransom gets right to the point. âI did you a solid. Took care of the guy who tried to jack your girl.â He jabs a finger in the air in Wrathâs direction. Wrath keeps a blank face, but I know itâs probably killing him. âYou said youâd give my girls a fair shot. First one you toss out and now Gabby comes home cryinâ.â
âBullshit,â Z mutters.
Ransom cocks his head to the side.
âListen. Your girl, Mariella, had no identification. How can we have her dancing here if we canât verify her age?â
âWhat the fuck you talkinâ bout? Sheâs got ID.â
Z shakes his head. âWell, she refused to give it to me. Said she had none. Whatâd you want me to do, beat it out of her?â
Killa sneers at Z, because yes, thatâs how heâd handle that sort of personnel issue.
âFine. Weâll deal with Mariella. But Gabby said you fired her.â
âJesus Christ,â Z says. âI didnât fucking fire her. I should have. Sheâs been causing trouble here since day one. Bitch cursed me out. I told her to go home and cool off. Told her to come back tomorrow.â
Ransom and Killa share another look.
My irritationâs rising to epic proportions the longer I sit here and deal with this bullshit. âDid you two really drag me down here because of some lies one of your girls told you?â
âGabby donât lie.â
âThe fuck she doesnât,â Z snaps. âSheâs been lying and stirring up shit since the day she showed up.â
Killa leans in close to Zâs face. âWatch your mouth, sheâs my cousin.â
Z isnât intimidated by anyone, not even this loony fuck. âWell, your cousinâs a trouble-makinâ liar.â
I put my hand on Zâs arm and he sits back.
âOkay. Obviously this isnât going to work out. We gave it a shot. But itâs not a good fit.â I could mention we suspect sheâs been stealing shit and is responsible for sending a porno to my girl, but Iâm not about to let him know something so trivial had any effect on my life.
Ransom glares and I keep my bored expression in place.
âIf Mariella has the ID, she can come back. But weâre done with Gabby.â Shit, Iâve never even met Gabby and Iâm sick to death of her.
Next to me, Wrath shifts and Ransom focuses on him. âMaybe Gabby can work over at Furious Fitness?â
âWeâre not hiring,â Wrath answers smoothly without hesitation.
âYou got Wolf Knights workinâ there.â
âOne. I got one Wolf Knight there. And heâs been there since the beginning. It ainât a club business.â Iâm surprised Wrath explained at all. I fully expected him to knock Ransom out.
âEverythingâs club business.â When none of us respond, Ransom gets up from the table slowly. âYou hear about our brother that got pulled out of the river?â he asks me.
I stand and meet his stare head-on. âHeard about it. Didnât know the body was con
nected to you.â
âYeah. Went missing back when our clubs were having some issues. His brother disappeared too.â
The tension around the table rises. âThatâs unfortunate.â
âYeah. It is.â He keeps giving me that evil-blank stare.
âYou got something you want me to say, Ransom?â
âNo. Just wondering how long this truce between the clubs will last.â
âThat a threat?â
âNot at all.â He motions for Killa to follow him. âLater, Rock.â
After Iâm certain theyâre gone, I sit back down at the table.
âWhat the fuck was that all about?â Z asks.
âI think he sent the girls here to get info on his missing guys.â
âHow did he think that would ever work?â Wrath asks.
âProbably figured weâd fuck âem and pillow talk?â Z offers.
Wrathâs mouth twists down. âChrist, if we were that stupid we would have been dead a long time ago.â
âShit, if I was that big a whore, my dick would have fallen off a long time ago,â Z jokes.
We all stare at him.
âHey, I could be a lot worse.â
This whole nightâs giving me a headache. âNo one rides alone. No one near Ironworks for any reason. That goes for the girls too.â
No one argues.
CHAPTER SEVEN
It seems like years ago that Trinity sat down and planned this party. Iâve been looking forward to it and itâs finally here.
The location has changed to Rockâs house. The house Bricks and his girlfriend, Winter are now renting. I feel awful imposing on them, but neither of them seem to mind. Winter throws herself into decorating and follows Trinityâs precise orders for, well, everything.
I havenât heard from Sophie since our showdown, and Iâm not sure what to think. My heart hurts for the years of friendship we shared which apparently mean nothing to her.
Wing Fling, the caterer Trinity found to provide the chicken wings, arrives early and sets up outside on the stone patio out back.
âI love this patio. Can we do something like this at our house?â
Rockâs mouth turns up and his arms slip around my waist, pulling my back to his chest. âI love hearing you say âour houseâ.â He leans down and whispers in my ear. âWe can do anything you want.â
Itâs simple, but I love him for it.
âWe can clear more trees so thereâs a better view of the mountains if you want.â
âOkay.â
âAnything my girl wants, she gets.â
âThank you, Rock.â My hands rub over his forearms, finally settling on his hands clasped over my middle. His chin rests on my head.
âShould we call the fire department?â Z asks as he walks up.
âWhy, whatâs wrong?â
âNothing. Worried you two were fused together.â
âVery funny, asshat.â
Rock and Z both laugh at my comeback. Sometimes I think they egg me on just so Iâll insult them.
Z drops into one of the chairs, and Rock pulls one over next to him. Rock hooks an arm around my waist and tugs me into his lap. We watch while Z puts on a show of inhaling about fifty chicken wings.
âArenât you going to eat anything, Hope?â Trinity asks as she joins us. âYou know, before Z eats everything in sight.â
âIâm a growing boy,â he mumbles.
âYeah, outward not upward,â Wrath jokes.
âIâm too nervous,â I explain. Answering Trinityâs earlier question.
Rock gently squeezes my hip. âWhat are you nervous about, Baby Doll?â
Flustered because now I have four sets of eyes on me, I try to kid around. âOh the usual, someone choking on a chicken bone.â
âYou worried Sophieâs gonna show up?â Wrath asks. Perceptive bastard.
âA little.â
âLilly wouldnât do that to you,â Z says. It makes me wonder just how often Z and Lilly see each other. Trinity hands him a napkin as heâs about to wipe his hands on his jeans.
âGreat idea, but messy.â
âMaybe you can find someone to lick your fingers, bro,â Wrath says, nodding at Lilly who just arrived.
I push myself out of Rockâs lap before he has a chance to grab me. âExcuse me, guys.â Rockâs approach to parties has always been to let everyone come to him. As MC president, I guess that makes sense. Iâve always been a mingler, and I feel bad about neglecting our guests.
âLilly,â I call out before she wanders inside.
She turns and breaks into a smile. âHey, bride-to-be! You look beautiful.â
âThank you.â I was nervous the pomegranate-red dress was too short. Rock assured me it was the perfect length. For what, he didnât specify.
She hands me a card and I shake my head. âWe meant it when we said we didnât want anything.â
âItâs not from me. Itâs from Sophie.â
âOh. Sorry youâre in the middle.â
âIâm not. What she did was shitty. I know she feels awful. Not only about Rock, but about not telling you and then causing the scene at Maraâs birthday. All of it.â
âWell, her fingers arenât broken, are they? She could call me.â
âSheâs afraid you wonât talk to her and she didnât want to stress you out.â
Sounds more cowardly to me. But I donât want to argue with Lilly today. Turning, I take in the scene of our big, extended Lost Kings family and Iâm struck by how happy I am to be a part of it.
âZâs over with Rock if you want to say hello. Or lick his fingers. Up to you.â
She gives me the strangest look, then grins. âRockâs good for you, Hope.â
âHey, donât be mad, but Iâm going to stick this in my purse and read it later. I just donâtââ
She settles her hand on my arm to stop my rambling. âYou donât have to explain yourself to me. I understand.â
She bites her lip and stares at me before finally, asking, âIs Z here with anyone?â
âNope.â
She nods, but still doesnât make a move. Rock joins us, by slipping an arm around my waist. âThanks for coming, Lilly.â
âI wouldnât miss this for anything.â
âZâs over there.â Rock tips his head in the direction of the patio. âWas bugging me all morning about whether or not youâd be here.â
âOh, really?â She looks to me for confirmation, but I just shrug.
âI was here early with Trinity setting up.â
âOh, whereâs Trinity? I want to say hi to her.â
âSomewhere. Just find the big blond guy, she wonât be far.â Rock jokes.
âOkay.â
Lilly sways into the crowd, definitely turning a lot of heads. Sheâs a brave one. In a backyard full of bikers, she ignores everyone until she finds Trinity.
âThey seem to get along,â Rock says.
âYes.â I tap him with the card Iâm still holding. âThis is from Sophie, but I donât want to deal with it right now.â
âSo donât. I donât want you upset today.â
Rocking up on my tiptoes I brush a kiss on his cheek. âYouâre the sweetest.â
His arm tightens around my waist. âI want to make you happy from now on.â
âYou do.â I turn so I can entwine my arms around him and press my cheek to his chest.
âYou okay?â he asks after a few minutes.
âMore than okay. Iâm very content. Thank you for giving me a family.â Just as that thought comes out of my mouth, the guys start whistling and making all sorts of obnoxious noises at us.
âA family full of degenerate fuckwits,â he says. But itâs said with affection. âAre you happy?â
âIâm always happy when Iâm with you.â
His faces relaxes and he presses a kiss to my forehead. âYou mean that?â
âWith everything in me.â
âGood. Iâm happiest when Iâm with you
too.â
High-pitched squeals are the only warning I have before someone slams into me from behind, wrapping her arms around Rock and me.
âUncle Rock! Iâm so excited.â She squeezes even tighter. âI canât wait to call you Aunt Hope,â Heidi babbles out breathlessly against my ear.
Extracting myself from Rockâs hold isnât easy. But I do and face Heidi for a proper greeting. Axelâs patiently waiting behind her and flashes a quick smile.
âThanks, honey.â
I feel incredibly old while she rattles off a bunch of things she has planned before the end of school.
âGot your college application in yet, Heidi?â Rock asks.
She dips her head. âNo. With everything that happened with Grams and moving into Marcelâs place, Iââ
My heart aches for Heidi. âI can help you, if you need it, Heidi.â
âThanks, Hope. I might. There were a few forms I wasnât sure what to do with.â
âHowâre your classes, Axel?â Rock asks. I guess he gets a day off from being just âprospect.â
âOkay.â
âHeâs being modest, Uncle Rock. He was offered an apprenticeship over the summer.â
âThatâs great.â
Axel seems unsure. As if maybe the club wonât give him time for the job or something.
Teller joins us and tries to give his sister a hug, but she shies away from him. Because Iâm nosy, I ask what everyone else is thinking. âWhatâs wrong, Heidi?â
âOh, sheâs pissed at me because I told her she doesnât need to get a job,â Teller explains. âShe wonât even go get her permit, but she wants to get a job.â
âI can walk there. Itâs right down the street!â she fumes.
I tap her shoulder to draw her attention from her brother before she attacks him. âWhere?â
âAt Stewartâs. I can ring up ice cream and sell coffee. Iâm not dumb.â
âI didnât say you were dumb,â Teller grumbles.
âHoney, I think you have to be twenty-one to work there. Or at least eighteen, since they sell cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets.â
âOh. Really?â
âPretty sure. I know it looks like an easy job, but a friend of mine worked there one summer and said they were strict.â
