He meets me at the front door of the clubhouse anyway.
âHowâd you know it was me?â I tease, but my voice comes out strained.
âGot radar when it comes to you, Baby Doll.â
I fling myself against him. As soon as he wraps his arms around me my mind settles. âWhatâs the matter?â he murmurs against my ear.
I pull away so I can see his face. âSophie showed up.â
âShit. Howâd that go?â
âBad. It was so awkward. I held it together during dinner, but then we caused a huge scene downstairs outside the restaurant. Half the lawyers and politicians in Empire probably overheard us. She admitted it. Apologized. Asked how she could fix it. But I didnât have an answer.â I leave out the uglier bits of our fight, especially the part about how she always liked Rock, because on my way home, some of her words hit their target.
âIâm so sorry, baby. Iââ
âRock, itâs fine. I understand why you didnât want to tell me.â
He nods once, but I can tell itâs still weighing on him. âDonât turn this into a bigger deal than it is. You and I are fine. Sophie and me, not so much.â
One corner of his mouth turns up and I can see the comforting reply forming on his tongue when Trinityâs voice interrupts.
âIâm glad youâre back, Hope. I have a few things I want to go over with you.â She doesnât pick her head up once as she rounds the corner and nestles into the sofa while flipping through a huge white binder. Seems she was busy while I was away. I raise an eyebrow at Rock, making him laugh.
âIâm afraid to ask,â I whisper.
âI heard you asked her this morning? Sheâs been waiting for you since she got home.â
âOh boy.â
Curling my hand around Rockâs I pull him over to the couch and sit him down. If I have to suffer through this wedding planning stuff, so does he. âHey, Trin, let me go change. Iâll be right back.â
She pats Rockâs arm like she knows exactly why I sat him there.
If we end up in the bedroom together, we wonât come back downstairs anytime soon.
âIâm not sure I like you two conspiring together,â Rock grumbles.
When I return, Trinityâs chattering away and Rock looks like he wants to run away. I stifle my laughter and squeeze in between them. Sheâs not seeking any opinions from me though. Itâs more like she wants to run things by me, which is fine. Honestly, if I didnât think sheâd kill me, Iâd drag Rock down to City Hall, marry him tomorrow and skip all this.
Z joins us by propping half his butt on the arm of the couch. Heâs tense, as if heâs ready to run the second Trinity turns her maid-of-honor-zilla eyes on him.
My phone stirs, and I yank it out of my pocket.
âThink itâs Sophie?â Rock asks.
âMaybe.â My face squinches into a frown as the unfamiliar alert of a video text blinks back at me. âWeird,â I mumble. Thereâs no chance to figure out how to play it, before it starts.
And I just stare.
The angle is terrible. The screen is fuzzy. But Iâd recognize those rippling muscles and the inked forearms no matter what. I also recognize Rockâs office at Crystal Ball.
What I donât recognize is the backside of the girl my fiancé is nailing over his desk. The image of the hands Iâve held and kissed hundreds of times, curled around some strange girlâs waist, holding her down while he fucks her, burns my eyes. Their pornographic moans and grunts fill the air.
I canât breathe.
Hot and cold prickles over my skin.
My stomach lurches.
âHope?â
Iâm going to be sick.
The phone clatters to the floor as I jump up and run to the bathroom. Pity the drop didnât break my phone.
The sounds of my fiancé fucking someone else follow me all the way down the hall.
âWhat the ever-loving fuck?â Iâm not shouting, but Iâm damn fucking close. Z snatches the phone out of my hand just as Wrath and Murphy walk in the front door.
Wrath lifts his chin at me. âWhatâs wrong, brother?â
I canât even put it into words.
Trinity unfolds herself from the couch and gently taps my arm. âIâll go make sure sheâs okay.â She practically runs out of the room.
I need to go check on Hope myself, but Iâm frozen. Two questions wonât stop pounding through my head.
One. How do I have a sex tape floating around and didnât even know it?
Two. Who the fuck would send it to Hope?
Z gives the guys a rundown. As if more people need to know about this.
âBro, youâre safe. It ainât recent.â He taps the phone. âNo anchor tat.â
Wrath glares at him. âItâs disturbing how well you know his body.â
I wrestle the phone out of his hands. âI know itâs not recent, you dick.â
âShit. Thatâs cold. She okay?â Murphy asks.
âI donât know.â
âShe saw it?â Wrath asks. âJesus Christ, where is she?â
Iâm shaking with so much rage, I canât even answer. As I stalk down the hallway, I take a number of deep breaths to calm myself so I can take care of my girl.
My hand presses against the bathroom door, swinging it open just enough to hear the girlsâ muffled voices.
âItâs never going to end, is it?â Hope asks.
Trinity mumbles something back, then someone runs water. âHere wash your face.â
âUgh. I need to brush my teeth. I feel disgusting.â
âBarfing will do that to ya,â Trinity teases. Hope actually laughs and Iâm able to relax a notch.
âI donât think Iâve ever had such a visceral reaction to something.â
âHoney, thatâs fucking horrible. I knowâ¦I understand, believe me.â
âI have to get out of here.â The panic in Hopeâs voice is clear. Fuck me. Things have been so good lately. Something bothers her, we talk it out. No running. Not that she has anywhere to run to now that she sold her house. But my girlâs resourceful; if she wanted to hide out, she would.
âHope,â I call out.
âJust a sec.â
Trinity brushes past me first and squeezes my arm.
Hopeâs pale and water still clings to the ends of her hair from where she must have splashed it on her face.
âYou okay, Baby Doll?â
She gives me a weak smile. âYeah.â She edges out of the bathroom door, careful not to touch me. I want to reach out and hug her to me, but I feel like an utterly disgusting jackass who shouldnât be anywhere near her.
âHope, Iâmââ
âItâs okay. Iâm okay. I uh, just need a few minutes to myself.â
She walks to the front door and I follow. At the last second, I grab her hand and spin her around to face me. âPlease donât go.â
Her big green eyes stare up and I see it. Itâs still there. The love she has for me. âIâm not going anywhere, Rock. Well, I do want to take a walk. Can you give me that? Please?â
Christ, Iâd give this woman anything in the entire world. âYeah, baby, I can do that.â My fucking throatâs so tight, I barely get the words out.
âThank you.â She reaches up and rubs her cheek against mine. âIâm not mad at you, okay? I love you.â
She pulls away and before I answer, she darts out the door, jogging across the parking lot to the trail that will take her to the house weâre building on the property.
Sheâs not leaving.
I turn to find Z, Wrath and Murphy watching me. âPlease tell me one of you fucks recognizes who it is?â
âYou donât even know who it is?â Murphy asks. Wrath slaps him upside the head, saving me the trouble.
âNo. Fucking video has to be more than two years old.â
Murphy shakes his head. âWhat kind of sick bitch keeps that shit for so long?â
âNever mind that, what kind of sick bitch sends it to his olâ lady? And
why?â Z asks.
I got nothinâ.
âIâll make sure Z works on it. Go check on your girl,â Wrath says while slapping Zâs back.
âKnock it off, asshole,â he says while shrugging Wrath off. He pins me with an irritated look. âI love ya, brother, but I donât know how many more times I feel like watching this.â
Murphy snickers and takes the phone out of Zâs hands. âGotta be one of the dancers? Unless you were taking randoms back to your office.â
The look on my face has to be murderous. The smile slides off Murphyâs face and he hurries into the war room to get away from me.
Wrath lifts his chin. âGo. We got this.â
The crisp evening air emphasizes how hot I am. Furious hot. I take my time walking through the woods until my headâs clearer. As I approach the house, my heart kicks up for different reasons. Hopeâs sitting on one of the steps to the unfinished front porch. Her headâs turned away, so I have a minute to observe her before she realizes Iâm here. Sheâs not crying, thank fuck.
The snap of a twig under my boot turns her attention on me. A soft smile lights up her face. âHey. Howâd you know Iâd be here?â
âA guess.â
She pats the stone beside her and I take a seat. âYou okay?â
âIâll be fine.â
âHope, Iâmââ
She curls her hand over mine and squeezes. âDonât. Itâs not your fault.â
âYeah it is. Why do I even know people who do shit like that?â
âWas it a girl from CB?â
Admitting to her that I have no clue whoâs on the video is the last thing I want to do. âDonât do this, Hope.â
We sit there silently holding hands. Both of us staring into the woods.
âIâm sorry I acted like a baby,â she says after a while. I glance over and her cheeks are bright pink. âIâm so embarrassed.â
âDonât be.â Christ, Iâd be worried if it didnât upset her. âI donâtâI donât even want to work there anymore.â
âYou donât really.â
âI mean, I shouldnât be around naked chicks who arenât my wife.â
She laughs so hard she snorts, which makes her laugh even harder. âI love you, Rock.â
âIâm serious.â
She turns and settles her hand on my cheek. âI knew from day one you owned a strip club. Donât think because weâre getting married, I expect you to never set foot in there again. Iâm not that woman.â
âYeah, I know you wouldnât ask that.â I wrap my arms around her shoulders. âMaybe Iâll just make you come with me.â
She snorts again, then turns serious. âAre there any more homemade pornos floating around I should know about?â
âThere better not be. I didnât know about that one.â
She shakes her head, but thereâs a smile twitching at the corners of her mouth. She stands and holds her hands out to me. âIâm a lucky girl. My manâs got ladies hanging on to old videos, but the real deal is all mine.â
Should I feel like a pussy because sheâs trying to cheer me up? Probably. Do I? No. Iâm too fuckinâ happy this fucked-up mess hasnât made her change her mind.
The guys are all watching me when we return. Waiting to see if Iâll fall apart probably. Iâm sure theyâre thinking Cinderellaâs too soft to take some stupid prank. I stiffen my spine and hold my head up. Itâs bad enough they know I ran and threw up after seeing the video. My stomach tilts even thinking about the image of Rock andâ
No. Donât go there.
Wrathâs the first one to ask if Iâm okay.
âIâm fine.â
I can tell heâs not convinced but he nods anyway.
Z is much more proactive in defending his presidentâs reputation. âHope, you know it wasnât recent. The tat with your nameâs missing.â
My mouth twists down. Is that why theyâre worried? âI knew it had to be old.â
Z raises an eyebrow, but doesnât voice whatâs on his mind.
Behind me, Rock slips his arms around my waist and pulls me against him. âThank you, baby,â he whispers against my ear.
I raise my hand and ruffle his hair, then turn my head to whisper back. âI didnât think for one second it was recent, Rochlan. I know you. I trust you.â
âIâve been obsessed with you from the day we met. Couldnât get hard for another woman if I tried.â
Heâs completely serious and instead of laughing, I turn and kiss his cheek. âGood. You want to make our own movie?â
He raises his eyebrows and I love the power I have to still surprise him. He flicks his gaze to something behind me and shakes his head. âNo. Because if one of them ever saw it, Iâd kill them.â
âWhyâre you making murder faces at us, prez?â Z asks and I burst out laughing.
Rock shakes his head, then lifts his chin at Z, I assume, since heâs the one to answer Rockâs unspoken question. âNah, Murphyâs still looking at it. Might be Lexi.â
I glance up at Rock, but he wonât meet my eyes. Heâs too busy staring daggers at Z.
Turning, I catch the look on Zâs face.
Rock, takes my hand, and pulls me toward the war room. âWait a second, you donât know who it is?â
âThanks, dick,â Rock snarls at Z.
Itâs sort of disgusting, but also tragically funny. My lips struggle not to smirk. âThe trials and tribulations of a reformed manwhore. You could be your own reality television show.â
The guys laugh. Rockâs eyes widen for a second, then he shakes his head. âWhat have I done to you?â
âWould you rather I laugh or cry?â
He slings his arm over my shoulder. âNeither, if youâre gonna laugh at my expense.â
Thereâs humor underneath his words, so I didnât offend him. âWell, who took your off-the-market status the hardest?â Rock rolls his eyes at my question. âThatâs probably the best place to start.â
âWeâll figure it out. It wonât happen again,â Z assures me, his expression dark and unreadable.
Understanding whaps me upside the head. âYouâre not going to hurt her, are you?â
âNo, Hope. I was thinking about asking her to join me for a spa day.â
âWatch it, asshole,â Rock says low enough for Z to sense the danger and back off.
âAt the very least sheâs fired. Girls know better than to film shit like that. Then to send it to an old ladyâno.â Wrath says.
âYeah, but what if another girl there sent it? Or a jealous boyfriend?â
Wrath places both hands on his hips and narrows his eyes at me. âAre you really defending some bitch who sent you a porno featuring your man, Hope?â he asks.
It is pretty ridiculous, so I laugh. âHonestly, can we just forget about the whole thing? If thatâs the worst thing someone can throw at me, Iâll be fine.â My voice betrays my brave words, but the guys nod at me. âWhereâs Trinity? We werenât done with our party stuff.â
Wrath seems to notice Trinityâs absence for the first time. âShit, Iâll get her,â he grumbles and stalks down the hallway.
Trinityâs coming out of the bathroom when I walk into our room. Rubbing a towel over her face, so she doesnât see me at first.
âTrin, Hopeâs back. Sheâs looking for you.â
âIs she okay?â
âSheâs fine.â Better than I expected honestly. I assumed we were all in for those two taking another âbreakâ after something like that. âAre you okay?â For some reason my girl seems more rattled than anyone.
âYeah, I just feel bad for her, thatâs all.â She hesitates like thereâs more on her mind but she doesnât want to upset me.
âYou worried youâre going to get a video next?â
âAm I?â
âNo.â Well, at least I donât think so. It seems Rock wasnât aware of his. âBabe, I love Rock like a brother, but heâs got blinders when it comes to women. Thinks theyâre all sweet, innocent darlin
gs, when in reality most of those bitches would stab their own mother to make an extra buck.â
âYour point?â
My point is, any of the dancers I nailed at CB, I paid close attention to. And there werenât that many anyway. I preferred club girls who understood the consequences of pulling that kind of stunt. I donât think any of that is helpful at the moment.
When I donât answer, Trinity cocks her head. âIs that how you feel about me?â
âNo. Fuck no.â
âIâmââ
âOne of the sweetest, most generous people I know.â She opens her mouth to protest, Iâm sure. âDonât. Whether you accept it or not, youâve always been more than just a club girl. And now youâre a maid of honor who has a bride out there waiting for all your great ideas.â
That finally gets a smile out of her. âI think I left my binder out there.â
âYeah. Better go get it before Hope starts flipping through it and messing up your stuff.â
Now Iâve got her. I hold out my hand and she takes it, staring up at me. âI love you, Wyatt. I want all that stuff to be in our past.â
âIt is.â
I wish I felt as convinced as I sound.
âRock, can I ask you something?â Hope whispers just as Iâm on the edge of sleep.
âWhat, baby?â I mumble.
âI need you to answer honestly. No sparing my feelings or self-esteem boosts.â
Now, Iâm fully awake. âWhatâs wrong, Hope?â
âCan you do that?â
âYes,â I answer slowly. This feels like a trap and I wonder why she waited until I was half-asleep to ask.
âAm I enough for you?â
âWhat?â
âAm I enough for you? Do I satisfy you? Make you happy?â Her voice barely rises above a whisper, and I roll over to snap the light on. I need to see her face.
âWhatâs this about?â I might as well just say it. âThe video?â
âNo. Yes. I donât know.â
âHow can you ask me that?â
âI donât know.â
âHope, look at me.â
It takes her a second but she turns and meets my eyes. âArenât we past this?â
Her teeth sink into her bottom lip, rolling half into her mouth and she nods.
