âAre you sure purpleâs okay, Hope?â she asks.
âYes. I think weâll go for jewel tones.â
Maraâs dress is also one-shouldered, pleated a little different and in a peacock-teal color that looks so pretty with her reddish-gold hair.
âWhat do you think?â Trinity asks. Lilly and I chuckle at her choice. Itâs also one-shouldered, but sapphire blue.
âI feel like odd-girl out,â Lilly jokes. Her dress has a high halter neck with a key hole cut out in the front, in crimson.
âItâs beautiful, Trinity,â I assure her. Lilly and Mara agree. Heidiâs nowhere to be found.
âDid she go back and change?â I ask Lilly who shrugs.
Gloria points to the window. âSheâs outside with the young man. Still in the dress, so I hope thatâs the one sheâs buying.â
Oh jeez.
Mara and Lilly donât need to have the situation spelled out. âTheyâre so cute,â Mara whispers. âOlder brotherâs best friend. So romantic.â She giggles.
âShe has a boyfriend,â I answer dryly.
Lilly snorts but keeps her thoughts to herself.
âWhat are you thinking for shoes?â Trinity asks, saving me from being dragged into a conversation about Heidiâs love life.
âFlats? I donât want to break an ankle on my wedding day. The groundâs pretty uneven up there.â
Trinity nods thoughtfully.
âCowboy boots would be super-cute with that dress, Hope,â Lilly says while eyeing me up and down. âFancy ones.â
âOh, thatâs a great idea,â Trinity chimes in. âRock loves country music. Would probably surprise the hell out of him.â
âHe does?â
Trinity nods. Interesting. How come I donât know this about my man?
Lilly wiggles her eyebrows at me. âThen after the wedding you can ride him like a rodeo girl.â
âMust you alwaysââ
âYes,â she cuts me off as she follows me back into the dressing rooms. Now that I finally have Lilly alone, I have to explain.
âI finally read Sophieâs letter.â
Lilly raises an eyebrow.
âWith everything that happened that night, I neverââ
âI assumed thatâs what happened.â
âIs she okay?â
Lillyâs gaze darts away.
âLilly?â I prompt.
âNo. Itâs been rough.â
She must notice the guilty expression that slides over my face because she rushes to explain. âNot because of anything you did. I told her what happened. She understands why you havenât contacted her.â
A relieved breath wooshes out of me. Although part of me is a little embarrassed.
âShe canât have visitors and only limited phone calls right now anyway. If you send mail, theyâll read it first.â
âIâll send her something.â
Lilly nods and digs around in her purse for a notebook. She scribbles out the information and hands it over.
âYouâve got a lot on your plate, Hope. Worry about getting Rock home and the wedding. Sheâsâ¦sheâll be there a while.â
I donât get a chance to ask any follow-up questions. Trinity, throws the curtain open. âWhatâre you two doing? Hurry up.â
Sheâs already back in her street clothes and has been conducting cowgirl boot research. âCheck these out. Theyâd be perfect with the dress.â
Itâs hard to tell from the tiny photo on her cell phone, but the colors pop. âThose are cute.â
âDouble M off exit twelve carries them. Wanna hit them up next?â
âOkay.â
âWill you hate me if I canât go?â Lilly asks.
âOf course not.â
Trinity snickers. âAt least itâs a manlier store for Murphy.â
We all have a much needed laugh.
âFind a dress?â I ask as Murphy stomps into the clubhouse.
âI hope you picked a blue one. Itâs my favorite color on you,â Z adds. âMakes your eyes pop.â
âI hate both of you,â Murphy bitches as he throws himself down next to me.
Hope and Trinity walk in laughing.
âWhereâs Heidi?â Teller asks.
Hope jerks her thumb over her shoulder. âOutside with Axel.â
Murphy folds his arms over his chest, sinks down into the couch and closes his eyes. âIâm done for the day.â
Hope and Trinity laugh at his misery. âI think we did push him beyond all appropriate manly-limits,â Hope says with false sincerity.
âYes. You did,â Murphy agrees without opening his eyes.
Z smacks him. âYou got to sit around watching hot chicks try on dresses, quit your bitching. Wrath and I did real work today.â
Murphy opens one eye. âI assure you, listening to them yap about stick-on bras and halter-whatevers was not fun.â
Hope blushes and laughs. âSorry, Murphy.â
âIs Heidi okay?â Teller asks.
âDonât worry, we didnât corrupt your sister,â Trinity says.
Teller snorts and sits back. âIâm more worried she talked you into buying her a bunch of shit she doesnât need.â
âOh, no. Heidiâs not like that, Teller.â As much as Heidi gets on my nerves, I canât help but love the way Hopeâs taken to her.
I lift my chin at Trinity. âFind a dress?â
âYup.â
âCan I see it?â
âNope.â
I raise an eyebrow at Hope. âI thought the groom couldnât see the brideâs dress. Why canât I see hers?â
âWe donât have them yet. They needed some alterations,â she explains.
âIâm not going back to pick them up,â Murphy informs us. âJust puttinâ it out there. Z can go, since he thinks itâs so much fun.â
âLetâs hope itâs not necessary,â Hope says softly. âAny news?â
I shake my head. âNothing. Glassman called at five and said he hadnât heard anything. I didnât think it was worth bothering you with no news.â
âOkay. Shit.â She chews on her bottom lip and stares at the clock over the television.
âDid he say anything else?â Trinity asks.
âYeah, if he didnât hear anything by eleven tomorrow, heâs going to file a writ? I donât know what that is.â
âJesus Christ,â she mutters. âItâs an extraordinary measure. It should definitely move things along though. Theyâll have to produce him in court either tomorrow or the next day. I hope Glassmanâs going to file with a different judge. Shit.â
Z sits up. âIs that bad, Hope?â
âI donât know. I donât know if Glassman just wants to make some noise, or he got back some negative information from the DA. I just donât know. I canât believe I was out dress-shopping all afternoon, I should haveââ
âHope. Calm the fuck down,â Z snaps. Murphy, Teller and I all stare at him. Heâs never short with her. âWeâre paying Glassman a shit-ton of money to take care of this stuff for us. You told me yourself, heâs a prick, but heâs good at what he does, right?â
âYes.â
âThen donât beat yourself up anymore. Trust me, Rock will be much happier knowing you were doing wedding stuff, instead of moping around here with us.â
She doesnât look convinced, but at least sheâs not hysterical. I tap her leg to get her attention. âI know you think itâs just silly stuff, but the fact that you havenât given up on him and youâre still planning to marry him means a lot.â
âYeah, and if thatâs not enough, that corset thingie you were talking about will definitely cheer him up,â Murphy jokes.
Hopeâs eyes widen, and then she breaks into a smile. âYou ass.â
Theyâre still chuckling over that when Trinity asks where Mariella is.
âUpstairs. She hasnât come down since you guys left.â
âShit. I should check on her.â Trinity turns to see if Hopeâs coming, but she shakes her head.
/>
âWhatâs wrong?â Z asks, after Trinityâs gone.
âNothing. I know I make her uncomfortable, so I donât want to keep bugging her.â
Murphy points a finger at her. âYouâre our First Lady. You bug whoever you want.â
Hope snickers. âThanks, Murphy.â
The next morning, Iâm woken up at seven by my phone. Next to me Trinity moans.
âShit, itâs Glassman. Hello?â
âOh. I was trying to get Hope. Iâve got so many damn numbersââ
âWell, you got Wrath. Whatâs going on?â
âHeâs getting released today. Probably take a few hours to process him out. Iâd say be there by ten just in case it goes quick.â
Thank fuck.
I get a few more details from him and hang up.
âYou better let Hope know,â Trinity says as she sits up and stretches.
âI will.â Iâm busy texting everyone to get their asses down here for church. âNeed to call a meeting first.â
âWhy?â
I give her the side eye and she huffs at me. âSheâs gonna want to come with us to pick him up and itâs not safe.â
âFine, whatever.â
Almost everyoneâs at the table when I get there. I donât fuck around. âRockâs getting out today. Glassman said be there at ten, but he didnât know how long it would take to process Rock out. We gotta assume Vipers know about his release and might try something.â
âHope canât go,â Z says.
âNo shit.â
Teller pipes up. âTake two cars. Four of us and Bricks. Everyone else stay here to make sure the place and the girls are protected.â
âGuess I better get Hope down here and let her know.â
Z quirks an eyebrow. âShe doesnât know yet? Man, sheâs gonna rip your nuts off for not telling her right away.â
Fuckers all have a good laugh over that.
Come down to war room.
My heart thump, thump, thumps as soon as Wrathâs text sinks in. Somethingâs up. They had an emergency club meeting this morning and Iâm scared to death Iâm in for bad news.
I scramble into a pair of jeans, a T-shirt and throw my hair into a messy knot before hurrying downstairs. Wrath, Z, Teller, Murphy and Dex are waiting at the table.
âYou can come in, Hope.â Wrath points to Rockâs chair. âSit.â
Iâm shaking so hard, it takes a couple minutes to pull the heavy chair out. Z jumps up to pull it out for me. âEnjoy it now, Hope. Itâs probably the last time weâll invite you to the table.â
Fear slices right through me and Z must realize I didnât take his words as the joke he meant.
âHope, Iâm teasing.â
âSit down, asshole,â Wrath growls at Z. He turns to me and his face softens. âRockâs getting out this morning.â
All the air rushes out of me, and I slump forward. âOh, thank God.â Anger replaces my fear and I smack Wrath and Z, then glare at the rest of them since theyâre out of smacking range. âWhy didnât you just say that instead of scaring me?â
âSorry. We werenât trying to scare you,â Z explains.
âWhatâs going on?â
âWe took a vote.â
âOn what?â
âWhoâs collecting Rock.â
âCollecting. What the heck does that mean? Go get him and bring him home.â
âWe need you to stay here.â
âFine.â
The guys share another look.
âWe thought youâd give us a hard time.â
âAre you kidding me?â I shake my head. âAre you bringing his bike?â
âWhat? No. This isnât the movies, Hope. Weâre worried about a fucking ambush.â
My teeth sink into my bottom lip so hard I wince. âThen I guess you better be extra careful. Because if anything happens to himâ¦â I donât need to make threats. They know how I feel.
Wrath grins and points at Murphy and Teller. âGo get ready.â He turns back to me. âDex is staying here with you.â
âOkay.â
Dex gets up and leaves the table. âCall me if you need something, hon.â
âThanks.â
I move to get up as well, but Wrath puts his hand over mine. âStay for a second.â
My gaze shoots to Z and he nods, so I drop back down into Rockâs chair. âWhatâs wrong?â My heartâs pounding. What arenât they telling me?
Neither of them meet my eyes at first. Then Wrath turns his gaze on me. âSome guys in the life look at jail time as some twisted badge of honorââ
âRockâs not one of them,â I answer.
Z speaks up. âNo.â
âGuys, Iâm kind of anxious for him to get home. So can you get to the point?â
Wrath rolls his eyes and Z cracks a smile. âWhat weâre trying to say is, donât be surprised or get your feelings hurt if he wants to go for a ride when he gets back.â Wrath looks me in the eye. âAlone.â
Honestly, thatâs not a shock to me. âOkay.â
âHeâs dying to see you, sugar,â Z shrugs, âBut you never know.â
âOkay. Thank you for warning me.â I stand because I think this time weâre finished and I really am anxious for them to bring Rock home. âIs there anything else?â
Wrath shakes his head. âNo. Weâre gonna go get your man.â
âOkay. Iâm going to, uh, pack a bag in case Rock wants me to go with him?â I hate how small and quivery my voice comes out. But Wrathâs face brightens.
âThatâs a great idea.â They follow me out of the war room. âGo ask Dex for some travel stuff. Heâll hook you up with a compression pack or two.â
I have no idea what that is, but I donât care. Iâm so excited to see Rock, I canât stand it. âWould you guys hurry up, please?â
âEager?â Z teases.
âDonât mess with me, Z.â
His mouth curls into a smirk and I just know heâs got something dirty he wants to share but wonât because he doesnât want to offend me.
Wrath never worries about offending anyone and opens his mouth, but I cut him off. âDonât you dare make a crack about me needing to get laid. I will kick both your asses.â
The two of them shake with laughter.
âJerks. Get out of here.â
Zâs still laughing at me.
âGo ahead, Hope. Weâll be back before you know it,â Wrath says.
âThank you.â
Butterflies zip and dance in my stomach. Iâm so excited to see Rock I can barely breathe.
âGood God, that womanâs a trip.â Zâs still laughing when we hit the road.
âShe took that better than I expected.â
âWhatâd you tell her?â Murphy asks from the back seat. Teller and Bricks are in the SUV behind ours. Iâm not sure why Murphy rode with us.
Iâm about to tell him to fuck off and mind his own business when Z answers for me.
âNothing bad, just that her olâ man will probably wanna go for a ride when he gets back.â
âDid you check the garage to see what I fixed up for them?â Murphy asks.
Iâll give Murphy credit when heâs earned it. âYeah. You did good.â
âI hope she likes it.â
I donât laugh or tease him about why heâs seeking Hopeâs approval so much. Christ, I must be growing up or something.
As soon as weâre in Slater County, the atmosphere in the car shifts. Zâs more alert, watching everything. Murphy too. Iâm keeping an eye on the rearview to make sure we havenât picked up any admirers.
âIâm gonna circle round once first,â I tell them. Z nods and keeps staring out the window. Downtown Slater is shady as fuck. Glassman instructed me to pick Rock up at the back entrance. Of course, thereâs no parking allowed back there. Fuck it. I pull right up in front of the gate. Weâre not leaving the vehicles and we sure as fuck ainât staying long.
I check the time. Nine forty-five. At least weâre ea
rly.
âGlassman said be here by ten, but it might take longer.â
âYou watch the gate for him. Murphy and I will watch the area.â
âChrist, I hope theyâre not gonna make him wait even longer,â Murphy grumbles.
Doesnât matter how long we have to wait. I ainât leaving without our prez.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
The process to get out of jail takes almost as long as it does to get in. Iâm ready to strangle someone by the time the last chain-link gate slides open. The sight of the two black SUVs waiting at the curb keep me sane.
Wrathâs waiting on the other side of the gate and pulls me into a bear hug, slapping the crap out of me in the process. After my time inside, Iâm a little weird about anyone in my personal space. But itâs Wrathâheâs been up in my personal space since day oneâso I know itâs a mix of genuine affection and shielding me in case someone decides to take a shot.
A few quick strides and heâs shoving me into the front seat of my SUV. Couple seconds later weâre getting the fuck out of Slater County. I never want to set foot here again.
I twist in my seat and find Murphy and Z in the back wearing matching happy grins.
âGood to have you back, prez.â
My smileâs tight. Iâm thrilled to see my brothers on this side of the fence but also crazed from being caged in for so long.
âWhereâs Hope?â
Wrath glances over. âHome.â
âWe didnât know what to expect. Dex is at the clubhouse keeping an eye on things. No way were we bringing her down here,â Z explains.
âNo. Thatâs good.â Thatâs all I would have needed. Having her visit me in jail was humiliating enough. Coming to collect me? No. Not to mention, I donât want her in Slater County either. âShe okay?â
âYeah. She did good, Rock. Never gave us shit about following her everywhere,â Z says with a smirk.
His comment turns my own mouth up. My gaze slides to Murphy. âYou okay? Why so quiet?â
âNothinâ. Glad youâre out, thatâs all.â He gestures at Z and Wrath. âTwo of them combined canât replace you.â Murphyâs voice catches and he looks out the window.
I reach back and slap his leg. âThanks, brother.â
âIâd be insulted, except heâs right,â Wrath says quietly.
I turn my attention to him. âHowâs Trinny?â
