Page 14 of White Heat (Lost Kings MC 5)
After theyâre out of earshot, Murphy and I are the only ones left at the table. âThanks, Hope.â
âFor what?â
âAlways being so good to her.â
âI canât help it.â
The corners of his mouth turn up. âThanks for trying to talk her into another school.â
I turn his words over in my head before answering. âI wasnât saying it for your benefit.â
He just stares at me.
âSorry, I didnât mean that to come out so harsh. I want whatâs best for her. I followed my high school boyfriend to college and it was a big mistake.â
âI thought you met your husband in college?â
How exactly had I forgotten that?
âI did. They were actually roommates freshman year.â
âAwkward.â
Enough years have passed that I can laugh about it now. âYou have no idea. My boyfriend was cheating on me, and Clay couldnât figure out how to tell me.â
Murphy chuckles. âBet he was there to comfort you after.â
âNot really. Itââ Huh. I never gave this a whole lot of thought. âHe took a few months to ask me out. He said I was aloof.â
âSounds like guy code for stuck up.â
âThatâs what I said!â He laughs a little harder and I move over a few chairs to sit next to him.
âThat was nice advice you gave Heidi about the driving too. Thanks.â
Sometimes I think Murphy worries about Heidi more than Teller does.
âWhat did you mean about she can go anywhere she wants? Did she have somewhere else in mind?â
His gaze wanders to the mural over the bar against the back wall. âI donât know. She hasnât talked to me about that stuff in years.â
It seems he has more to say, so I keep quiet and wait for him to continue. âSheâs always been smart. Knew when she was little sheâd be going to college.â He shrugs but still wonât look my way. âBeen putting money aside for years now, so you know, if she got into a real good school but didnât have enough scholarships to cover it she could still go.â
Jesus. My breath catches and I canât speak. My own mother drained every penny from the college fund my father started for me long before I started filling out applications. Here this guy who has no obligation to herâ¦I canât even wrap my head around it.
âI know thatâs dumb,â he says quickly. âTâs been doing the same thing.â
It takes a second to find the right words. âItâs not dumb at all. I think thatâs the sweetest thing Iâve ever heard.â
He huffs a short laugh. âYeah, sweet. Thatâs me.â His jaw tightens and his next words come out harsh. âShe asked if I was trying to buy her when I mentioned it a few months back.â
âIâm sure she was only kidding.â
âMaybe.â He shakes his head. âYou see the good in all of us.â
âI see what you canât see about yourself.â
âYou keep thinking Iâm good and Iâm not, Hope. I hurt everyone around me.â
Murphyâs always so hard on himself. To everyone else heâs tough and cocky. But underâway underâthe bravado, heâs awfully sensitive. Iâm already teetering on the edge of tears every day, and this conversation is about to push me right off the ledge. Instead, I throw my arms around his shoulders, embracing him in an awkward hug. He reaches up and pats my arm.
âWhatâs going on?â Wrathâs voice booms through the dining room, startling me. My arms drop from Murphy, but I pat him on the back.
âNothing. Heidi was here with her college applications. We were just talking about where sheâs planning to go.â
Wrath narrows his eyes at me making me feel like a kid who got caught doing something naughty. âYou need to have your arms around him to do that?â
Oh, he did not just say that. Iâm out of my chair so quick, it screeches across the floor. âDonât turn a friendly gesture into something ugly. Iâm not in the mood for your caveman rules right now, Wrath.â
âSee what I mean?â Murphy mutters.
Now Iâm only more confused.
âCut it out, bro. Sheâsââ
I whip around and nail Murphy with a stare. âIf you say âold enough to be your mother,â I will kick your ass.â
Murphy snorts, his shoulders shaking with laughter. âThatâs not what I was going to say.â He raises his gaze to Wrath. âDonât take shit out on her. She didnât do anything wrong.â
This has to be the first time Iâve seen Murphy challenge Wrath and I want to get out of here before the room explodes. Wrath catches my hand as I pass him. âHey. Iâm sorry.â
Wrath apologizing?
âEverything okay?â Trinity asks as she enters the dining room.
Wrath gives me a pleading look, silently asking me not to tell her heâs been an ass before nine oâclock, I think.
I give him one last narrow-eyed glare before turning away. Yes, Iâm being a brat, but he really pissed me off implyingâ¦whatever the hell he was implying. âEverythingâs good, Trin. I need to run upstairs and change. Unless you need help?â
I know sheâll never take me up on an offer to help her in the kitchen. I could be insulted, but letâs be honest, Iâll just be in her way.
âWhy you so tweaked, man?â Murphy asks after Hope leaves.
I already feel bad about how I snapped at her. Murphyâs question makes it worse. âFuck off.â
He stands and shoves his chair in. âThis sucks for everyone. You wanna be a dick to me, fine, but donât treat her like shit. She just spent who knows how long helping Heidi out with her college stuff.â
Man, having Murphy tell me how to behave pisses me off. âI apologized. Now mind your own business before I kick your ass,â I growl.
My low voice and fuck-off stare finally work their magic. Murphy leaves, but not before reaching out to tap Trinity on the arm on his way out.
Dick.
Only the sight of Trinityâs perfect angel face calms me down. Especially when she turns and shines her smile on me. She hurries over and takes my hands. âMorning.â
How can I not lean down to kiss to her forehead?
âMorning, angel.â
âWhatâd I miss?â
Taking her hand, I tug her along into the kitchen.
âNothing. Stupid stuff.â
She nods and opens the refrigerator to start making breakfast. I drop into one of the kitchen chairs and enjoy watching her. Donât even bother asking what sheâs making.
After breakfast, sheâs still wearing a concerned face. Every few minutes she looks like sheâs gonna spit some words out, then she hesitates.
âWhatâs wrong, babe?â
Trinityâs hands keep nervously twisting in her lap until I put my own hand over them to stop her.
âPlease donât be mad.â
Naturally that raises my what the fuck radar. But I wait for her to continue without opening my big mouth.
âThings are good between usââ
âYeah.â Whereâs she going with this?
âIâve been feeling guilty about how I think Iâve fucked up your relationship with some of the guys.â
âYou got nothing to feel guilty about. Weâre fine.â
âYes.â She taps my chest. âYou and I are fine.â The firm tone of her voice makes me think she finally believes it. âBut all those years, I never thought about what I was doing to the brotherhood.â
âWeâre fine.â I got every brotherâs back and I know theyâve got mine. Never doubt it for a second.
Wait a second. âDid one of them ask you to talk to me?â And by one of them, Iâve narrowed it down to Teller or Murphy. I will beat the shit out of them if they heaped any guilt on my girl.
âNo. Nothing like that. I knowâ¦I know Tellerâs worried you hate him. Murphy hasnât said anything, but heâs bothered. I donât think you realize how much heâs always looked up to you.â
Yeah, so much that he spent a good f
our years nailing my girl.
Done. Over with. In the past. Moving forward.
âSo what are you asking?â
âNothing. Iâm not trying to stick my nose in club business. I just want to help fix whatever I fucked up.â
âYou didnâtââ
âYes, I did.â
âI was going to say, you didnât fuck it up alone.â
The corner of her mouth lifts. âTrue.â
âSo, what do you want me to do? Buy him a puppy? Take him fishing? Teach him how to throw a football?â
Her hand thumps against my chest as she shakes with laughter. âNo! Stop making fun of me.â
I love when Trinity laughs. Especially when Iâm the one who makes her do it. And while itâs bringing up some uncomfortable shit from our past, I love her devotion to the club and how much she wants whatâs best for everyone.
âYou realize if Iâm nice to him, heâll get spooked and think Iâm tryinâ to off him, right? I have a reputation to uphold. Gotta pick on the younger guys and toughen them up.â
She laughs even harder, almost falling out of my lap. Christ, this womanâs making me soft. Sheâs not taking me seriously at all. I flick my fingers against her sides until sheâs laughing so hard she can barely breathe. âStop! Stop!â
âIâll think of something, Angel Face. You put it out of your head, okay? Only man you need to worry about is me.â
All laughter leaves her face. âThis is me worrying about you. I want you to be happy. I wantââ
âYou make me happy.â
âThank you. Let me finish. I donât want any leftover hostility that messes with you guys.â
âWeâre men. Weâre always hostile. Iâd take a bullet for that little fuck, same as heâd do for me.â
âPlease donât say that.â Her sudden serious tone takes all the fun out of our moment. âI couldnât stand losing you after we just figured things out.â
âAre you saying you want me to push Murph in front of a bullet instead?â
Her girlish laughs come racing back and she shoves my chest. âNo! Dammit, Iâm serious.â
âIâm so confused, angel.â
âNo youâre not.â
âHey,â I grab her hand and hold it still. âI get what youâre saying.â
But for the rest of the day I canât get her words out of my head. Thatâs how I find myself alone with Murphy later on. War room doorâs open, which isnât unusual, but it makes me curious enough to poke my head in.
âWhatâs up, Murph?â
His head snaps up and maybe Trinityâs right, because he almost seems nervous. Murphyâs a tough little fuck. Isnât afraid of much. Not that I mind him being afraid of me. He should be. But still.
âNothing.â He holds out a parts manual to me. âTrying to put an order together.â
âFor what?â
He shrugs and looks away. âBike for Rock. I assume heâll want to take off for a few days when he gets out.â
Good to know brother hasnât lost faith.
âYeah, and?â
âNothinâ. Tryinâ to decide if it should be two-up.â
âGotcha.â
âIf it is, Iâm gonna order stuff to make it more comfortable for her. If notâ¦â
âHe can just take one of the plain bikes from the garage?â
âYeah.â
Thinking back to the last time the club went through similar shit, I recall Rock taking off by himself. But thatâs only because his skank ex-wife deserted his ass while he was inside. âHope will be here when he gets out. Heâll want her with him.â
I grab the list from his hand and snicker as I read it. âOh, man. Heâll hate this shit.â Rock likes his bike unfussy and streamlined. Murphyâs building it purely with the passengerâs comfort in mind.
âYeah, but sheâll appreciate it.â
âHappy wife, happy life?â
âSomething like that.â
âWhile youâre at it,â I flip through until I find what I want. âOrder this for me too.â
Murphy raises an eyebrow and I shrug. âHer ass sits there permanently now, might as well make sure sheâs comfortable too.â
âYouâre a real romantic, bro.â
âThanks. Thatâs what I hear.â
Murphy shakes his head, but heâs laughing.
âWant to come down to the gym with me? Jakeâs out, I could use help with one of his classes. And I got that kid I want to maybe bring in as a prospect. You should meet him and tell me what you think.â
Youâd think I asked him to chop his dick off the way he looks at me. âSure. No problem.â
Well, arenât I in for a fun afternoon.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Keeping myself busy when Iâm so worried about Rock isnât easy. Throwing myself into wedding planning helps. But itâs bittersweet. In the back of my mind, I keep wondering if Iâm planning a party for nothing. If Iâll be saying my vows behind the brick walls of the Slater County Jail.
Flimsy evidence. Unreliable witness.
I find myself chanting those two phrases to myself a lot these days.
Trinityâs been such a big help. I donât know what Iâd do without her. Without any of the guys.
Wrath ran out of their room like I tried to set him on fire when I showed up at their door with my wedding checklist. âI need to get Rockâs wedding band,â I inform Trinity after he leaves.
Trinityâs face breaks into a grin. Weâve spent hours searching websites and catalogs together. âDid you finally find one you like?â
âI think so. I found this jeweler on Etsy. But I want to see the ring in person. Their shopâs in Boston. Are you up for a road trip?â
She chews on her bottom lip and wonât meet my eyes. âYou better ask Wrath.â
Oh, boy. I think a year ago if someone had said that to me, I would have flipped my lid. Now? âWell, yes. I assumed either he or Z would go with us.â
âItâs not Lost Kings territory.â
âSo?â
She stares at me as if Iâm dense.
âI wasnât planning go blazing through Massachusetts with a blinking neon LOKI sign, Trin.â
Finally, she lightens up and laughs. âYeah. Sorry.â
Now that I have it in my head, I canât let the idea go. It might be a touch of stir-crazy.
Damn, it grinds my gears to ask Wrathâs permission to take a two-hour drive. Especially when the first word out of his mouth is no.
âWhat do you mean no?â
âI mean no. Itâs not safe territory.â
Iâm trying. Trying really hard not to give Wrath a hard time. I know weâre all under stress. But I still want to smack him.
âWrath, if you can stand to leave your cut at home, and we take your truck or Rockâs SUV, how will anyone know who weâre affiliated with?â
âTell me why this is so important.â
Heâll think Iâm an idiot. Thereâs no indication Rockâs getting out anytime soon. But I canât explain it. I need to get his ring. I need to keep moving forward as if our wedding is happening in a few months.
I canât bear to think of the alternative.
âI want to get Rockâs wedding band,â I answer quietly. âI found what I want at this shop in Boston. But I want to see it in person and see if he can make a few adjustments.â
His face finally softens, but it takes a minute before he says anything. âOkay. Weâll go tomorrow. Do you know when theyâre open?â
âYes. All the informationâs upstairs, but Iâll email the owner to make sure heâs ready for us.â
âOkay.â
Cocking my head to the side, I study him for a second before asking my next question. âAre you going to allow Trinity to come?â Iâm really asking for trouble today arenât I?
âYes, she can come,â he snarks back at me. âAt least she knows how to behave,â he mumbles as he turns away.
âI heard that.â
âI said
it loud enough.â
âJerk.â
âLove you too, Cinderella.â
As soon as heâs gone, I jog up the stairs, feeling better about things. Trinityâs busy cleaning out one of the guest rooms. âWhat are you doing? I thought you werenât doing this stuff anymore?â
âSomeone has to.â
âJeez.â
Once sheâs got the laundry going, she lifts her chin at me. âWhatâre you up to?â
âYour manâs a pain in my ass.â
She chuckles and thankfully doesnât seem insulted. âTell me about it.â
âWell, he said we can go to Boston. Heâs driving us. Tomorrow. Can you come?â
âYeah. Of course.â
I canât even describe what went through me when Hope explained her need to get Rockâs wedding band. After that, how the fuck could I ever say no to her? She was right too, which annoys me. Thereâs no reason we canât go through the area if weâre not flying colors. Iâm so hyper-focused on keeping everyone safe, I barely want to leave the property anymore.
This trip will be good for us. Get Hope out of the house. Keep her focused on good things. And Iâm doing something good for my best friend by keeping his woman happy. Win-win.
And if I happen to pick up an engagement ring for Trinity while Iâm there, even better.
Thatâs whatâs on my mind the next morning. Well, that and the fact that Trinityâs actually still asleep for once.
My phone goes off, just as Iâm about to wake her up in my special way.
Hope: Can you come upstairs when you have a chance?
Doesnât seem urgent. I go back and forth and finally decide to let Trinity sleep a little longer.
When I get to Hope and Rockâs room, I almost wish Iâd chosen to wake Trinity up instead.
The doorâs open a crack and swings wider as I knock. Hopeâs frantically pawing through Rockâs dresser, items scattered all over the place.
âWhatâre you up to, Hope?â
She barely glances at me before grabbing a dark red velvet box and thrusting it at me. I already know whatâs in it and my gut clenches.
She flips the lid open and plucks the hunk of white gold out and shoves it in my hands. âDoes this fit Rock? Do you know? He never wears rings. I have no idea what size he wears and I canât exactly go down to the jail to measure him.â Sheâs frantic, babbling and on the verge of tears, which is finally what snaps me out of my fog from seeing that hideous fucking ring again.
