Page 24 of Strength from Loyalty (Lost Kings MC 3)
Although Iâm offended, I canât dwell on it. Heidi hasnât stopped crying since we all got out of Rockâs SUV. She turned away from Axel, buried her head in my shoulder, and hasnât left my side since.
Weâre seated in the front row. Tellerâs on Heidiâs other side. Rockâs next to me. He squeezes my free hand and whispers, âThank you,â in my ear.
When the service is over, we stand. Axel hands Heidi some flowers, which she places on her grandmotherâs casket. Teller ventures to the other side to speak to one of his grandmotherâs friends.
âHope?â
Glancing up, I see Charlotte Clark, the attorney assigned to Heidi during the custody case. âHi, Charlotte.â
She turns her attention to Heidi, who lifted her head at the mention of Charlotteâs name. A bright smile flashes across her face and she straightens up. âThank you for coming, Miss Clark,â she says softly.
Charlotteâs mouth curves into a gentle smile. âOf course. Iâm so sorry, Heidi.â She glances at me. âIf you, ah, need anything, you have my number.â
âThank you.â
Itâs awkward trying to have a conversation here, so I invite her back to the house. As sheâs leaving, Teller spots her and catches up, walking her to her car. I glance at Rock, and he shrugs.
When we get to the house, Heidiâs so reluctant to go inside Axel takes her for a walk.
Murphy stares after them until I nudge him with my elbow. âYou okay, Murphy?â
He turns and hesitates before answering. âYeah, just wish I could do more for her.â
I think itâs obvious thereâs more to it than that. Taking his arm, I say, âYouâre a good guy, Blake.â
His face lights up in a playful smirk and he pats my hand. âAre you sure about that? Donât get too carried away, first lady.â
Pulling him away from the others, I say whatâs been bothering me for a while. âNow that you mention it, Heidi did share something with me that I found a little disturbing.â
To say heâs shocked is an understatement, but he recovers and puts on his disinterested face quick. âReally?â
âYes.â I lower my voice. âSheâs a kid. Leave her alone.â
âI donât know about that. Sometimes I think sheâs older than me.â
âYeah, sheâs a smart kid, but sheâs also an emotional teenage girl. Donât mess with her head.â
Finally, a guilty look crosses his face. âYou told me yourself the age of consent is seventeenââ
âThatâs not the point,â I hiss at him. âSheâs still a kid, and youâre a grown man.â
Murphy glares down at me, but I glare right back. Finally, he says what heâs clearly been thinking over. âThat girlâs needed someone to mother her for as long as Iâve known her, and I canât tell you how much I respect you for steppinâ up and takinâ on that job. Itâs the only reason Iâm not tellinâ you to fuck off and mind your own business right now.â
I raise an eyebrow at him and turn my head slightly in Rockâs direction.
âWell, that and Rock would fuckinâ kill me.â He glances at Rock. âYou havenât told him, have you?â
Uh-oh. âNo. I donât see any reason to cause trouble. Heidi asked me not to.â
âGo ahead. Itâll earn me a beatdown from Teller or Wrath. I probably deserve it.â
Confused about why Wrath would get involved, I shake my head. âJust leave her alone. Sheâs with Axel. He treats her wellââ
His expression hardens at the mention of Axelâs name. âAxelâs a non-issue once sheâs eighteen.â
âMurphyâwhat about that girl, Serena? She really likes you.â
âSheâs a way to pass the time when Iâm visiting downstate.â He flashes me a cheeky grin that I want to smack off his face. âIâll set her up with Axel. Does that make you feel better?â
âDammitââ
All humor disappears from his face. âLook, I get where youâre coming from. I learned my lesson after her birthday. Whether you think so or not, I want whatâs best for her. She needs to concentrate on school, and I know sheâs got that college course sheâs taking over the summer. Iâm not planninâ to interfere with any of that stuff.â
I think thatâs as good as Iâm going to get from him at the moment. âOkay. Can I ask you something, though?â
âShoot.â
âWhat if she chooses Axel? You have to realize what she felt for you was a girlish crush.â
His mouth opens and closes. Then he lifts his shoulders in a careless shrug. âI love her. That wonât change. I ainât gonna kill Axel if thatâs what youâre worried about.â
Before I have a chance to respond to that, Rock breaks away from his conversation with Sway. A slight frown crosses his face as he takes in Murphy and me. I frown right back at him.
Murphy untangles himself from me. âIâm going to see if T needs anything.â He squeezes my hand before bounding up the front steps of the old Victorian.
âWhat were you two talking about?â Rock asks.
âNothing. Weâre both worried about Heidi, thatâs all.â I hate lying to him, but Iâm not really sure what to do at the moment.
Rockâs gaze sweeps up and down the quiet street. âWhereâd they go?â
âFor a walk. I canât really blame her for not wanting to hang out inside the house.â
He grunts, âYeah, guess not,â while rubbing his hand over the back of his neck. Obviously, something is bothering him.
âAre you and Z taking off now?â
He glances at Sway. âIn a bit. Tawnyâs gonna ride back with you.â
âOkay.â
All of a sudden, he yanks me closer. Settling his big hands on my hips, he stares down at me with a serious expression. âTwo things, baby doll.â
I raise an eyebrow, curious to find out what he means.
âThank you for everything youâre doing for Heidi today. It means a lot to me.â
âOf course.â
âSecond thing, you look really beautiful.â
My heart jumps. I did end up wearing the black dress I brought from home. It is too big on me, so I cinched it with a belt, and because itâs chilly, I tossed a cardigan over it. Combined with the sensible black shoes I chose because of the uneven ground I expected at the cemetery, I feel like a dowdy nun. That Rock thinks otherwiseâenough to stop and tell meâis nice.
âThank you.â
Inside, the house is organized chaos. Trinityâs hiding out in the kitchen with Wrath standing guard. Not only did our Lost Kings family follow us back, but some of the grandmotherâs friends found their way to the house as well. Itâs an awkward comingling.
Turns out Wrath is just as unfriendly to the elderly as he is to everyone else.
Especially if he thinks one of them is indirectly insulting Trinity.
This is where I think my people skills might come in handy. âThank you so much for coming, Mrs. Brown. Can I help you find a seat in the living room?â I ask as I take the old womanâs plate, offer her my arm, and lead her out of the kitchen.
âThat girl shouldnât be in there touching Sue Anneâs things,â she grumbles at me.
âSheâs just trying to help out. Sue Anne wouldnât want guests going hungry in her house, right?â I have no idea if this is true or not. Heidiâs grandmother didnât strike me as the hostess type, but we didnât exactly meet under friendly circumstances. The woman was more likely to throw a cup of coffee in my face than offer me one to drink.
âThatâs true, I guess. Are you Heidiâs mother?â She leans in and stage-whispers at me, âI thought you were a prostitute?â
Oh dear.
âNo. No. Iâm a friend of the family.â
âOh. You look nice. Not like the rest of those barbarians her grandson associates with.â
My mouth twitches, but I manage to keep it together, find the woman a place to sit, someone else to talk to, and escape into the kitchen myself.
Tense voices reach my ears rig
ht outside the kitchen doorway. I canât make out what Trinity said, but Tawny comes through loud and clear. âWhereâs Hope? She should be taking care of this stuff, not you,â she bitches.
Jeez, is it too late to escape out the front door?
But no, I canât leave Trinity. Not when it seems Wrath has disappeared. âHi, Tawny.â
She turns and gives me a warm smile. âThere you are. The old lady of the upstate charter.â
Good grief.
Trinity rolls her eyes and sticks out her tongue at Tawnyâs back, and I do my best not to giggle.
Tawny gives me a tight embrace. âBet you didnât think you were going to see me again so soon, did you?â she asks.
âNo, but itâs a pleasure, even under the terrible circumstances. I know Teller and Heidi appreciate you guys being here for them.â
She beams at me, and I mentally give myself a pat on the back. Over Tawnyâs shoulder, I spot Trinity giving me a thumbs-up.
Squelching down my laughter, I focus on Tawny. âDid the guys take off?â I ask.
She waves her hand in the air. âYou know the men. Club business canât waitânot even for death. Now whereâs Heidi? I havenât seen her in a few years.â She steers me into the living room and onto the front porch.
We find Heidi and Axel sitting on the front steps together. Tawny fusses over her, which surprisingly seems to cheer her up. Heidi introduces Axel, and Tawny rakes her gaze over him like heâs a prime rib.
âYouâre a prospect, Axel?â I guess sheâs forgotten that she's already met him.
âYes, maâam.â Iâve never seen Axel nervous, but Tawny seems to freak him out. I canât blame the kid.
Murphy ambles up and observes the scene. For once, he seems to take mercy on Axel. âProspect, drinks are gettinâ thin. Go grab some sodas,â he says, tossing him a set of keys.
Axel catches them midair and nods. âNice meetinâ you, Tawny.â
âIâm sure Iâll see you again later,â she coos.
Disturbing.
Murphy sits next to Heidi on the step and slips an arm around her shoulders. Iâm trying to keep an eye on them and keep up with Tawnyâs chatter. Eventually, I give up. Theyâre in broad daylight. Murphy promised me heâd behave. So when Tawny pulls me inside, I follow.
âSo this guy whose stash we jacked is legit?â Z asks as we drive back to the clubhouse in Swayâs SUV.
Sway chuckles. âYeah, itâs an embarrassing situation. He and his partners run a shop out in New Hampshire. Donât need permits or anything out there.â
âSo who jacked them?â
âFucking little gangsters from the city tryinâ to move in on our turf. Gonna get ugly before it gets better, Iâm afraid.â
Iâm familiar with the dilemma Swayâs facing. âI hear that.â
âYou still got that snake problem up here?â
âYup.â
Sway just grunts in response.
âSo I didnât bring cash to replace what Iâm takinâ back, but I think youâll be pleased.â He gestures for Z to pull one of the bags in the cargo area up front.
A black POF P-415 rests inside. I donât take it out since, you know, weâre driving around in broad daylight and all.
âThereâs two of âem,â Sway explains.
âYeah, all right. Can definitely use those,â I say as I pass the bag back to Z.
âThese will be fun to put on paper,â Z says, getting all giddy at the thought of blowing holes through shit. âThese are supposed to run cooler and be more accurate.â
âGood deer gun,â Sway comments.
Yeah, I donât really picture Sway stalking through timber with those.
Z taps my shoulder. âCall Wrath, see if theyâre wrapping up soon.â
Wrath answers on the first ring. âWhat?â
âYou with the girls?â
âNot at the moment. All those old biddies were givinâ me a headache. Why?â
âNothing. Wanted an ETA.â
âChrist, canât be away from your woman for more than five seconds?â he snarks. Even though heâs giving me a hard time, by the sound of things, heâs on his way to where the girls are.
âWhy donât you have Trin start wrappinâ stuff upâ I suggest.
âGladly.â
I listen while he barks out orders to Murphy.
âSee you in a bit, prez,â he says and hangs up.
When we arrive, the clubhouse is empty. Z takes the weapons Sway brought and stashes them in our locker. He brings up the ones weâre handing over, and we help Sway get things packed down in the back of his SUV for the trip home.
After that, thereâs not much else to do besides wait for the girls. Z wanders inside while Sway and I sit outside.
âSo this woman, sheâs it for you?â he asks after a while.
âYeah.â
ââBout time. Need to have a son to leave the club to.â
Well, fuck if thatâs not a punch in the balls. âNah. I ainât worried about that. Teller or Z would make fine presidents. Murphy, if he quits his bitching.â
Sway chuckles. âNotice you ainât mentioning Wrath.â
âFuck, no. Heâs got no interest. Need him right where he is anyway.â
His mouth twists into a smirk. âWhere? Looked like all he was doinâ was hovering âround Trinity back at the wake.â
Yeah, I donât even think Wrath saw Sway. Not that we were there very long. I donât feel like gossiping about my brother, though, so I ignore Swayâs comment.
For a while, we reminisce about old times. Swayâs impressed with our setup. We talk about some of the other changes we want to make so weâre more self-sufficient.
âYou got some green I can take back?â he asks.
I shake my head. âMan, weâre tapped. Sparkyâs got a sick crop heâs tending to. I got this gangster asshole breathinâ down my neck for larger shipments.â
âThat sucks.â
âYes, it does, my friend.â
âYou need help with the gangster?â
I snort out a humorless laugh. âNot yet. His crew is our largest customer, and they still pay cash.â
âCash is king,â he jokes. I roll my eyes skyward, and Sway gives me a friendly punch in the arm. âNo, seriously, I might be able to hook you up with a crew down my way, if youâre interested.â
âMaybe.â While I appreciate the offerâand I doâI also know Sway will want a percentage of our sales. I also donât like the idea of needing his help to take care of my club. Might as well just hand him my president patch now if I canât figure this out on my own.
Weâre interrupted by the return of both cars, and I walk over to meet Hope. Murphyâs the first one out and rushes around the car to open the door for Tawny, who pats him on the cheek like heâs a kid. She barely throws a glance her husbandâs way.
Hope flings the back door open, and my breath catches when I see her smiling up at me. She grasps my hand and hops down from the SUV. For a moment, everyone else in the yard disappears. As she wraps her arms around my middle, all the unease from the day evaporates.
âHey, you,â she whispers up at me.
After I press a kiss against her forehead, I ask, âEverything go okay?â
âI think so.â She loosens her grip and turns toward Wrath. âWell, except for Wrath scaring all the old ladies out of the house,â she explains with a chuckle.
Wrath shrugs. âWhat? They didnât take any of your hints. Had to do somethinâ,â he explains without a trace of remorse. His gaze falls on Sway, and he lifts his chin. âWhat up, brother? Long time.â
âYeah.â Sway marches over so they can catch up.
âHeidi stay out there?â I ask.
Murphy joins us. âYeah, sheâs got school tomorrow. Teller helped her pack up some stuff to bring to his place.â
âGood.â
Seeing how irritated Tawny is, Hope kisses my cheek and joins her. What they still have to talk about after spending the day
together I have no idea, but I appreciate Hope making the effort. I admire my girl for stepping up yet again. It means a lot to me that she tries so hard to make sense of the clubâs cultureâsomething so foreign to herâand help where she can. Sheâs always so sensitive to otherâs feelingsâsomething a lot of us around here lack.
Wrathâs still catching up with Sway. Trinity looks a little lost as she watches everyone.
âNeed help, sweetheart?â I ask as I wander in her direction.
A nervous smile flickers over her face. âNah, I got it, prez. Thanks.â
âMurph,â I call out.
âYeah, prez.â
âHelp Trin unload, please.â
âYup.â He turns and snags the keys out of her pocket, making her laugh.
Satisfied thatâs taken care of, Iâm antsy to be alone with Hope. Seems like weâre all outside yapping forever when Sway finally declares itâs time to get on the road.
âYou sure you donât want to stay?â I ask out of respect.
âNah, got a meetinâ later.â
After we send them off, everyoneâs still standing around bullshittinâ. Iâve been as patient as I can be. Wrapping my hand around Hopeâs elbow, I tug her away from Trinity. âNeed to have a word with my first lady.â
At first, she startles, like sheâs afraid Iâm mad at her. With a tilt of my head and a raised eyebrow, she gets the picture quick.
Her lips curve into a flirty smile. âYes, Mr. President.â
Iâm exhausted when we finally get back to the clubhouse. Entertaining Tawny used up all my reserves. I struggled not to show my joy when they headed home.
Rock is clearly agitated about something. When he finally gets me alone, he wastes no time leading me upstairs. Once weâre in our room, he sits on the side of the bed to take off his boots while I wander into my closet to deposit my shoes and sweater.
âHope?â His voice pulls me out of the closet, to his side.
As Iâm standing in front of him, he tugs me between his legs and drops his head against my stomach. âThank you for all you did today,â he mumbles against me.
