âYep, honey, sure.â
She pushed open the door. His office was decked-out with pine furniture, making it bright, light, and spotlessly clean. Smooth and characterless. Matthew was engrossed in a spreadsheet on his computer, but Eleanor needed his full attention, so she loitered purposefully by the door.
Matthew got the hint and swivelled to face her in his leather chair. âIâm quite busy, Eleanor.â
âI know, but I need to talk to you.â
He absent-mindedly cracked his knuckles. âCan it wait âtil dinner?â
She stepped towards him. âNo.â
âWhat are we having for dinner by the way?â
âIâm going out for dinner.â
âOh yeah? Who with?â
She stood squarely on the shiny laminate floor. âJoseph Quinlan.â
âJoseph? He told me he was sickâ
âHe is. Heâs sick of you.â
âHa ha, very funny.â
âGo ahead and laugh, but itâs true. Heâs sick of you. And so am I.â
Matthewâs bland expression dropped to shock. âWhat are you talking about?â
âLook, Matthew, this was never going to be easy but I donât love you anymore. You treat me like crap and I canât be with you. Iâve made my decision tonight... Iâve packed a bag and Iâm going to move into my own place. Iâll be back for the rest of my things tomorrow.â
His jaw fell open. âWhat the hell are you saying? You canât do that!â
âYes I can. And I am.â
âNo youâre not, Eleanor. Stop this silly nonsense and go unpack. We belong together.â
âNo we donât.â
He held out his hands, as if trying to appeal to her common sense. âIs this because of that one stupid mistake I made?â
She scoffed. âYou mean the mistake you made when you admitted to me youâd been cheating?â
âYes... No! I mean the mistake was cheating.â
âBut youâre still doing it, though, arenât you?â
He ignored this direct question. âEleanor, come on. Weâve been through so much together, you canât pull out now.â
âWhy not? I donât love you. And you act as if you donât love me.â
; âOf course I love you,â he hissed. âBut I understand whatâs going on here. Youâve used me to get into News Scape and now you think you can just throw me away? Well, Iâm not letting you get away with this.â
She folded her arms across her chest. Oh really? And what do you plan to do?â
He faltered, opening and closing his mouth like dying fish. âIâll⦠think of something.â
