âNo,â Caine replied. âI donât want you to have her.â
âYou being inhospitable, boy?â
âHarry, it isnât possible for you to take her.â
âItâs a fair exchange,â Harry stated. âYouâre determined to have my girl, now arenât you?â
Caine nodded. âI am.â
âThen Iâm taking this one,â Harry countered.
âHarry, sheâs already taken,â Caine argued. He turned to his stepmother then and said, âMadam, please quit shouting. Itâs difficult enough to negotiate with this stubborn pirate. Nathan? If you donât quit laughing, Iâm going to bloody your nose again.â
âWhatâs this woman to you, Caine?â Harry asked. âYou just called her madam. Now what the hell does that meanâ
âSheâs my fatherâs wife.â
âBut she ainât your mama?â
âSheâs my stepmother,â Caine qualified.
âThen it shouldnât matter to you if I take her or not.â
Caine wondered what Harryâs real game was. âShe has been like a mother to me,â he said.
Harry frowned, then turned to his pretty captive. âDo you call him son?â
The Duchess lost her outraged expression and slowly shook her head. âI didnât believe he would wish me to call him son,â she answered.
âHe ainât your favorite,â Harry announced.
The Duke of Williamshire quit trying to get past Caine. His stance became relaxed. A hint of a smile turned his expression. He understood at last what this was all about, for he remembered Jadeâs instructions about loving his children equally. She must have mentioned her concern to Harry.
âI donât have a favorite child,â Gweneth cried out. âI love all my children.â
âBut he ainât yours.â
âWell, of course heâs mine,â she snapped.
The Duchess didnât look frightened now, only furious. âHow dare you suggest . . .â
âWell now, if youâd call him son,â Harry drawled out, âand if he called you mother, then I couldnât be taking you with me.â
âFor heavenâs sake, Gweneth, call Caine son!â Henry roared, trying to pretend outrage. He was so pleased inside over this surprising development, he wanted to laugh.
âSon,â Gweneth blurted out.
âYes, Mother?â Caine answered. He was looking at Harry, waiting for his next rebuttal.
Harry let go of his hostage. His chuckle was deep as he turned and walked out the doorway.
While Gweneth threw herself into her husbandâs arms, Caine followed Harry outside. âAll right, Harry, what was that all about?â
âMy reputation,â Harry drawled out after his men had taken their leave. âIâm a pirate, if youâll remember.â
âWhat else?â Caine asked, sensing there was more to tell.
âMy girl worried about Colin being the favorite,â Harry finally admitted.
Caine was astonished by that statement. âWhere did she get that idea?â
Harry shrugged. âDonât matter where she got it,â he replied. âI donât want her worrying, no matter what the niggly reason be. Youâre going to have to ask me for her, you know. Youâll have to do it proper, too, in front of me men. Itâs the only way youâre going to be getting her, son.â He paused to grin at Caine, then added, âCourse youâre going to have to find her first.â
A feeling of dread settled in Caineâs bones. âHell, Harry, she isnât upstairs?â
Harry shook his head.
âWhere is she?â
âNo need to shout, son,â Harry answered. âCanât tell you where she is either,â he added. He waved his men away when they started toward him, then said, âIt would be disloyal.â
âMy God, donât you . . .â
âIâm wondering to meself why you havenât noticed both Matthew and Jimbo are missing,â he interrupted. âThatâs telling, ainât it?â
âSheâs still in danger.â
âSheâll do all right.â
âTell me where she is,â Caine demanded.
âSheâs running from you, I imagine.â
Caine didnât want to waste any more time arguing with Harry. He turned around and almost ripped the hinges off the door as he pulled it open.
âWhere you going, boy?â Harry called out.
There was more than a thread of amusement in the old manâs voice. Caine wanted to kill him. âTracking, Harry.â
âYou any good at it?â
Caine didnât bother to answer that question.
âSheâs led you a merry chase with her little deception, now hasnât she? Iâd have to say she did a fair job of impressing you,â Harry called out at Caineâs back.
Caine turned around. âWhatâs the point, Harry?â
âWell now, Iâm thinking to meself itâs about time you did a little impressing of your own, assuming, of course, that youâre up to it.â
Caine took the steps to his bedroom two at a time. He was pulling his shirt over his head by the time Nathan caught up with him.
âWhatâs happening now?â Nathan demanded.
âJadeâs gone.â
âDamn,â Nathan muttered. âYou going after her?â
âI am.â
âIâll go with you.â
âNo.â
âYou could use my help.â
âNo,â Caine snapped. âIâll find her.â
Nathan reluctantly nodded. âYou any good at tracking?â
Caine nodded. âIâm good.â
âShe left you a message.â
âI saw it.â
Nathan strolled over to the side of Caineâs bed and lifted the long-stemmed white rose from the pillow. He inhaled the sweet fragrance, then walked over to the window to look outside.
âIs she in love with you?â Nathan asked.
âShe is,â Caine answered. His voice lost its brittle edge. âShe just doesnât know it yet.â
Nathan tossed the rose back-on the bed. âIâd say Jade was telling you goodbye when she left you the rose.â
âNo.â
âShe might be reminding you who she is, Caine.â
âThatâs part of it,â Caine said. He completed his change of clothes, stomped into his boots, and started for the door.
âThen whatâs the rest?â Nathan asked as he trailed after him.
âHarryâs right,â Caine muttered.
âWhat?â
âSheâs trying to impress me.â
Nathan laughed. âThat, too,â he agreed.
Caine bellowed for Sterns as he bounded down the stairs. The servant appeared at the doorway to the drawing room. âLyon will find Richards for us,â Caine said. âWhen the two arrive, make them wait until I get back, no matter how long it takes.â
âWhat if your friend canât find Richards?â Nathan asked.
âHeâll find him,â Caine answered. âI probably wonât be back before tomorrow morning,â he said. âTake care of things while Iâm gone, Sterns. You know what to do.â
âMeaning the guards, miâlord?â
Caine nodded. He started for the door, but Sternsâ question stopped him.
âWhere are you going, miâlord?â
âHunting.â
The door slammed shut.
Chapter Fourteen
Matthew and Jimbo appeared to be as weary as Jade was by the time they reached their destination. It had been decided that they would spend the night in the isolated inn Harry frequented when he was on the run. Jade had insisted they take a roundabout way there, adding two more hoursâ travel, just as an added precaution against being followed.
The innkeeper was a friend of Black Harryâs, a little on the disreputable side as well, and therefore never asked unnecessary questions. If he thought it odd a finely dressed young lady was traveling with two men who looked like theyâd cut a manâs throat for two pence, he certainly didnât remark upon it.
Jade was given the center bedchamber above t
he stairs. Jimbo and Matthew took the rooms on either side of her. Since the walls were paper-thin, neither man worried that anyone would be able to breach their temporary fortress. The steps were so old and rickety, a mouse would have made noise.
Jade soaked in a hot bath, then wrapped herself in Caineâs robe. She was stiff and out of sorts by the time she went to bed. Her injury from the pistol shot was almost completely healed now, but it still itched something fierce.
Jade fell asleep saying a prayer that the nightmare would not visit her tonight, worrying she might cry out and cause Matthew and Jimbo alarm.
The air turned chilly during the night. Jade burrowed under the covers. She never felt Caine climb into the bed beside her. When he put his arm around her and gently pulled her up against his side, she let out a soft sigh and snuggled closer to his familiar warmth.
Moonlight filtered through the small window. He smiled when he saw she was wearing his robe. Then he slowly slipped the garment off her. That task completed, he removed her knife from under the pillow, then began to nibble on the side of her neck.
She was slow to wake up. âCaine?â she whispered, her voice a sleepy blur.
âYes, love?â he whispered in her ear before his tongue swept inside to tease. She started shivering. It was just the reaction he wanted.
His hand moved down her chest, circled her navel, then trailed a hot path to one of her breasts.
She sighed again. He was so warm, smelled so wonderful, and oh, how he was making the cold disappear.
Caine continued to stroke her while he waited for her to realize where she was. He was ready to silence her if she tried to call out.
The awakening came like a bolt of lightning. The palm of his hand cut off her gasp. âNow, sweetheart, if you yell, Iâll have to hurt Matthew and Jimbo when they come charging in here,â he whispered. He rolled her onto her back, then covered her with his body. âYou wouldnât want that, would you?â
She shook her head. Caine slowly eased his hand away from her mouth.
âYouâre naked.â
âSo are you,â he whispered back. âConvenient, isnât it?â
âNo.â
âYes,â he answered. âAnd it feels good, doesnât it?â
It felt marvelous. She couldnât admit that, however. âHow did you get in here?â
He kissed her chin in answer to that question. Jade prodded his shoulder. âCaine, what are you doing here?â
âImpressing you, sweetheart.â
âWhat?â
âKeep your voice down, love,â he cautioned. âYou donât want to wake up the boys.â
âThey arenât boys,â she stammered out. She sounded breathless. The hair on his chest was tickling her breasts, making her nipples hard. She didnât want him to move away from her, though, and that honest admission made her frown. Lord, she was confused. âImpressing me, Caine?â she whispered. âI donât understand what you mean.â
âOf course you do, sweet,â he answered. He kissed the bridge of her nose. âGod, I love your freckles,â he said with a low groan. He kissed her long, hard, and when he was finished, she was clinging to his shoulders.
She recovered much quicker than he did. âHave you come to say goodbye then?â she asked him in a ragged whisper.
Her question was meant to rile him. The defenses again, he thought to himself. âNo, I didnât come to say goodbye,â he answered, determined not to get angry. âI came to make love to you.â
He grinned after making that promise. Jadeâs heart started pounding. It was the damned dimple, she told herself. It was too irresistible to ignore . . . and so appealingly boyish. He didnât feel like a boy, though. No, he had the body of a fit man, a warrior with sleek iron-hard muscles. She couldnât stop herself from rubbing her toes against his legs.
âSomeday, my love, youâre going to understand just how much I care for you. Youâre my light, my warmth, my other half. I only feel alive when Iâm with you. I love you.â
He kissed her again, then whispered, âOne day, youâll tell me you love me, too. For now Iâll be content to hear you say you want me.â
She shook her head. Caine could see the fear in her eyes, the confusion. His smile was filled with tenderness when he pushed her legs apart and settled himself between her silky thighs. He rubbed his hard arousal against her softness. âYou do want me, love.â
She closed her eyes with a telling sigh. Caine nibbled at her lips, tugging on her lower lip until she finally opened for him, then thrust his tongue inside to duel with hers.
âCaine, what are you . . .â
He silenced her with another long kiss, then whispered, âItâs called pillaging, Jade.â
âIt isnât.â
âHarry would be proud,â he drawled out. His mouth was now placing wet kisses on the smooth, sensitive skin below her chin. She couldnât quit trembling.
âYouâre mine, Jade. The sooner you understand that, the better it will be for you.â
âAnd then what, Caine?â she asked.
He lifted his head to stare down into her eyes. He could see the fear there, and the vulnerability. âYou learn to trust me,â he whispered. âAnd then we live happily ever after.â
âNo one lives happily ever after.â
âWe will.â
She shook her head. âGet off me, Caine. Youâre . . .â
âSolid, love,â he interrupted. âSteadfast, too. I wonât leave you.â
The promise was given in a fervent whisper. She pretended not to understand. âOf course you wonât leave me. Iâm leaving you.â
âI love you, Jade.â
Her eyes filled with tears. âYouâll get tired of me. I wonât change, not for you, not for anyone.â
âAll right.â
Her eyes widened. âAll right?â
He nodded. âIf you want to stay a thief, so be it. I wonât get tired of you, no matter what you do. And Iâll never leave you.â
âYou wonât be able to help it.â
Caine kissed her brow, then said, âI can see itâs going to take a little time for me to convince you. Will you give me at least two months?â
âCaine, I donât think . . .â
âYou owe me, Jade.â
âI what?â She sounded outraged. âWhy would you believe I owe you anything?â
âBecause you deceived me,â he explained. âYou caused me endless worry, too. And there I was, minding my own affairs that night in the tavern when you . . .â
âI also saved your brother,â she interrupted.
âThen thereâs the issue of my wounded pride, of course,â he drawled out. âA man shouldnât be made to feel heâs been manipulated.â
âCaine, for heavenâs sake.â
âPromise me youâll stay with me for two more months or Iâm going to make so much noise when I pillage you, both Matthew and Jimbo will come running.â
That odious threat got her full attention. The determined look in his eyes told her he meant what he threatened, too. âYou should be ashamed of yourself.â
âPromise me, Jade. Now.â
His voice had risen and she clamped her hand over his mouth in retaliation. âWill you explain how you settled on two months instead of one, or three, or . . .â
He shrugged. She feigned irritation. âAnd during those two months youâll probably be dragging me to your bed every single night, wonât you?â
âI will,â he answered with a grin. âDo you know, whenever I look at you, I get hard?â He shifted positions and pressed against her. âCan you feel how much I want you? You make me ache to be inside you.â
His honesty made her blush. âYou shouldnât say things like that,â she whispered. âAnd I shouldnât listen.â
âYou like it,â Caine told her. His mouth covered hers and his tongue slid inside to taste her again. Jade didnât protest. She wanted him too much to stop now. She moved against him, then froze when the bed made such a loud, squeaky noise.

p; âWe canât . . .â The denial came out with a groan.
âWe can,â he said, his voice a husky caress.
He silenced her worries with another kiss while he stoked the fire in her. Jade forgot all about Matthew and Jimbo. Caine was making her burn and all she could concentrate on was finding release from the sweet agony.
His fingers drove her wild. She was wet, hot, ready, knew she was going to die from the pressure building inside her. Her nails dug into his shoulder blades. She would have shouted for him to come to her if his mouth hadnât covered hers. Caine kept the torment up until she took him in her hands and tried to bring him inside her. He threw the coverlet off the bed, then followed it down to the floor with Jade protected in his arms. He cushioned the fall, taking most of the force on his back. Jade was sprawled on top of him. She tried to roll to her side, but Caine held her tight. âTake me inside you now, love,â he whispered as he pushed her thighs apart to straddle him.
She was trembling too much to help. Caine took over. He held her by the sides of her hips and slowly eased into her. He let out a low groan of raw pleasure. She whimpered at the same moment.
When he was deep within her, he twisted her hair around his hands and pulled her down for another hot kiss.
The mating rhythm took over. Caineâs discipline deserted him. His thrusts became more powerful, more determined. âTake me to heaven again, Jade,â he whispered when he was about to spill his hot seed inside her. âIâll keep you safe.â
Jade found her release seconds later. She arched against Caine, squeezed him tight, biting her lip to keep herself from crying out, and then collapsed on top of him.
Her face was buried in the crook of his neck. They were both covered with a sheen of perspiration. Jade tasted his skin with the tip of her tongue while she waited for her heart to slow down. She was too exhausted, too content, to move. Caine held her close. She could feel his heart pounding against her own.
âWhat are you thinking, Jade?â he asked.
When she didnât answer him, he pulled on her hair. âI know you found fulfillment. Are you going to deny it now?â
âNo,â she whispered shyly.
Caine moved to his feet in one fluid motion with Jade in his arms. When they were both back in bed and under the covers, she tried to turn her back to him. He wouldnât allow her retreat, but forced her to face him. âWell?â he demanded.
