“Oh yeah,” Amina replies, going to one of the bags hanging by my bedside full of clear fluid. “Otherwise, you might shock someone and if you don’t need a heart restarted, that could be a bad situation.”
“I’m sorry, Dr. Delgado?” I repeat, narrowing my eyes.
Amina cocks her head to the side. I know I’m acting weird but I don’t give a shit. I need to make sure my hearing hasn’t gotten fucked up because of the accident. “Yes… Dr. Delgado.”
“She? You said she’s a she?”
“Jesus Christ, Rex, women can be doctors,” Blaise whispers.
I wish I had the energy and strength to slap him on the arm. “That’s not my point, Blaise.”
“Then what is your point, man?” my friend shoots back.
I open my mouth to respond and say nothing.
“Dr. Delgado is one of our best,” Amina fills the silence. “She’s truly world-class. And we’re lucky to have her here in Ocotillo.”
She. Dr. Delgado. Dr. Isabella Delgado. It has to be her. She was a resident at this very hospital when I knew her. Five years ago, that was – that’s gotta be enough time to become a full-fledged doctor, right? She explained it all to me back then and I never really got all the ins and outs of the process. “I’d like to thank her,” I say, words bursting out of me. “Could I?”
Amina’s smile falters slightly. “Her shift ended about half an hour ago.”
I deflate.
“She might still be going through her closing process –”
I reinflate.
“But she’s probably in a rush to get home to her son.”
I don’t deflate this time. I pop like a sad fucking balloon. She’s got a kid. Isabella’s got a kid. And I know she didn’t do that alone. She’s probably married. Of course, she is. She’s a catch. And now she has that life she was looking forward to living once her career was settled. A husband and a baby. Probably a nice house too.
Fucking hell. Why does that hurt so bad? I haven’t seen her in all these years, spent only a month of my life with her…
I miss the guy I was back then. Before the fame hit like a ton of bricks. She got the last bit of me like that.
Now I’m Rex Redford, lead singer and guitarist for Black Flame and no matter where I go, that’s the baggage I carry with me. That I am known. Before anyone really knows me.
Isabella was the last person who got to know me as a stranger. Now everyone thinks they understand me without actually trying. I hate it.
“Well, then, tell her next time you see her that I’d like to thank her,” I say, settling back into the pillows.
Amina nods. “I will.”
After a bit more chatter about how I’m feeling, Amina disappears, bidding us to get some rest.
Blaise curls up on his chair for a nap and I…
I lie awake. No amount of drugs could put me to sleep right now.
Not with Isabella on my mind.
Chapter 4
Isabella
“You have to go talk to him, Isabella,” Amina says from behind the door of my locker.
I pull my scrubs on and sigh. “That’s not in my job description.”
